G'day Hal,

I sent this email into the GMCnet a few days ago but I never got a copy back
and I just checked and I can't seem to find it in Forum mirror so I'm
sending it again.

There is a discussion about how/where Clarence stretched the coaches could
you please provide the following measurements of your coach.

1) Overall length
2) Wheelbase as measured from the center of the front wheel to the middle of
the two rear wheels.
3) Distance from the center of the two rear wheels to the rear bumper.

Thanks,
Rob Mueller

Hi Rob,

Supposedly my stretch is a foot longer than the others that Buskirk did. It is 31 ft overall, 16 ft 2 in from CL of front wheel to CL of bogie and 26 ft 6 in from CL of front wheel to rear bumper. Both bumpers are extended somewhat for storage, 4 in +/- front and 2 in +/- rear. Until this came up I thought it was 30 ft overall. The body was raised about 2 inches above the frame. No wonder it takes so much space to turn around.

Any particular reason the body was raised? Larger capacity tanks perhaps? Just curious.

Hal,

Thanks!

According to some drawings I have the standard wheel base is 160 inches.
Yours is 16' 2" (194") so the bogies were moved back 34 inches on your
coach.

Including the 2" rearward shift of the bumper your "overhang" can be
calculated by subtracting 16' 2" (194) from 26' 6" (318") which is 124" or
10' 2". The standard "overhang" is 106" or 8' 10". That means 18" was added
behind the rear wheels. Maybe I have subtracted the 2" bumper extension as
that was not added to the frame itself.

When I was first looking a GMC I wanted a stretch coach so I could have rear
twins down the back. I found one in San Diego that looked good but found out
that the New South Wales Roads & Traffic Authority restricts the overhang to
60% of the wheel base max. The stretch I was looking at was one that the 24"
extension had been added to the back; the wheel base had not been changed
and there was no way it would meet regulations. Billy Massey sent me a
Buskirk that was up for sale. It was listed as a 29' coach. I got the owner
to send me the wheel base and overhang dimension and it easily met the
requirements as most of the stretch was added in front of the rear wheels. I
did not save the dimensions which is why I asked Hal for his. I do remember
that most of the stretch was added in front of the rear bogies.
Unfortunately by the time I figured out what a good deal it was at $35,000
and decided to buy it it was sold!

It appears that Clarence stretched the coaches in the middle which helped
keep the departure angle higher which in turn would help keep the rear
bumpers (and anything under it) from scraping when going in and out of
driveways.

Chris - I'm not sure why the body was raised. Regular fuel tanks were used (three) and the holding tanks don't seem any deeper. It does help clearance at the rear bumper and over the rear tires. Also I think it helps the aesthetics since it is so long.
