Every year about this time I post a warning to those of you who bought AFFF fire extinguishers a few years ago.
THEY WILL FREEZE if the temperature goes low enough. It is time to bring them in to keep them from freezing. They do not freeze until the temp is in the single digits but remove them now just in case and so you do not forget.

I'd hate to see what would happen if they froze and broke open at -20*

The danger is not breaking open when frozen.
The danger is after freezing, the foam contents chages its form, I think it gels.
After a freeze, the extinguisher will look perfectly normal but when you have a fire and need it, it won't fire.
We used to keep a stockpile of foam for a mass area foam fire fighting system. We were the cities back-up supply in case of emergency.
We ended up storing this cache in a heated shed and had a thermometer that indicated Hi and Lo temp max so we knew if the foam product was damaged by freezing.
The best thing to do would be to get those stick on temp indicators and stick it on the fire ext. When it says bad, its bad. If they can be refilled, then that is needed, if not, throw it out.
We have been lax because we are used to dry chemical where cold really does not affect the product, they are affected by the bumps of the travel. The recommended maintenance is to turn the extinguisher upside down in its cradle from time to time to let the dry chem powder move around and prevent it from compacting.
Again, dry chem will look normal but if it is compacted, when you need it, if it is compacted, it won't work when needed.

Your not suggesting Halon is better than foam are YOU???
Their ability is as limited as CO2 units.
