Well, I finally did it. I'm no longer a GMC-less lurker. I bought a lovely coach from a couple in Florence who were moving. Drove it back to Portland with no problems. It's a 1976, 26' Palm Beach. VIN TZE166V102273. Pictures at

I'm so excited! It's really very nice, everything works as far as I can tell, and I'm already collecting a list of things I want to upgrade. It has a rebuilt engine with a "power cam", throttle-body fuel injection, headers, 3.50 gears, Michelin tires and Alcoas, and Flex-steel couch and captain's chairs.
Tried to get it through Oregon DEQ this morning (it hasn't been registered since 5/08), but they wouldn't test it, because the idle wasn't stable, oscillating between about 200rpm and 1000rpm. Any thoughts on what I should do about that?

Congratulations. Very nice coach.. As I do not have FI,  I can only suggest a visual inspection of vacuum lines. Maybe spray some wd-40 around FI base and intake gaskets and see if idle picks up. If it has a vacuum controlled dist, check and see if it will hold vacuum and move the base plate. If all this checks out maybe some FI cleaner. If it has a check money light, pull the codes. If I was going to do the shotgun method, I probably would start with the MAP sensor. I am sure more places to look will be coming from people more qualified than me.
Or you could just move to a state that don`t inspect.  Good Luck and Happy Motoring.

Jay,
What a beauty! I'm still in my GMC honeymoon too - our Palm Beach's might have been twins at one time, my TZE is 102666, just a few coaches newer than yours. Mine is original and she looks it, but I love her.
How far have you driven? If you are on your first tank of gas I'd drive it a bit before doing any troubleshooting. Otherwise just listen to the guys here. I don't know how good the diagnosis will be, but they sure are entertaining! ;~)
Do you have any details about the fuel injection system? Perhaps it's a system that someone is familiar with.

The only thing I see needing an upgrade is the color. It's so, so retro.
You are one fortunate dude. You're starting out in good shape. No fair. Some
of us had to spend $5,000 just to go around the block two times.

There are a number of things. First we need to know what system it is. If it is a Howell, many of us have that system and can jump in. If it is Rochester, again you are in luck as we have a great expert with one of those systems.
The TBI is most likely being controlled by the computer and chances of the computer being wonky are pretty slim. So, at idle there are several things trying to happen. There is a little pintle that controls idle with a stepper motor. There are some adjustments that can be made on the stepper but it does not usually cause surging. If the stepper is moving in and out, that can cause a surge, but it won't be doing that unless something is messing up the mixture.
Someone mentioned vacuum lines and that is an excellent place to start. The Howell has a plate that goes between the manifold and the TBI. Unfortunately there is a screw right under the idle passage. Howell tells us to put a gob of RTV on top of the bolt to keep air from leaking. That is in the right back of the TBI.
Howell also supplied a gasket between the adaptor plate and the manifold that was just plain wrong. On our first attempt some of us tried RTV on that also. When I took my first one apart I found that seal was dubious at best. (The correct gasket is a Felpro / Carburetor Base Gasket for a 1976 Olds, Toronado,
455. You can go to Autozone.com and enter the SKU number 60335 in the product search box and the correct gasket will come up. )
Another thing I would like to know is if it is in closed loop when idling. If so, a bad mixture at say 800 RPM could cause a faulter, that was corrected when it went down to perhaps 400... and by the time the correction was made the engine almost died at 200. If you do not have a manual that came with the unit, I can send instructions for a Howell unit that will signal closed or open loop via the check engine light.
(That gob of RTV makes me nervous as the wrong RTV can ruin an O2 sensor.)
So, let us know if you have a Howell. It will have a sticker on the computer.

Congrads on your purchase.
Noticed that you might have a roof leak which is causing your head
liner to droop.
As far as the fuel injection system, DJ Eberheart should be able to assist you.
If not we can help you via our toll free line(800)752-7502.
You might want to check the vacuum lines as a start.Also it's not a
bad idea to load up with Super unleaded fuel as they have additional
additives that help aid in cleaning the injectors.
Adding bottles of additives do not work as well as there is no way to
control distribution of small amount of fluid in the 2 tanks.
