That works well on desktops and the BIG laptops with the numeric keypad.
It's a little more difficult on a smaller laptop. Many of them have a
"Function" key operated keypad. Look closely at the keys near the center
of the keyboard for faint light colored numbers on the edge of the keys.
If you find them, hold down the "Function" key (Usually labeled "Fn") and
the "Alt" key, then type 0162 on the "keypad" for the ¢, or Fn + Alt +
248 for degrees °.

My Toshibas, the emachines, and the old Compaq have the Fn key setup, but
my thinkpads don't.
Some are marked more visibly than the Toshiba, the emachines has the
keypad numbers inside a square, right there on the face of the key.

As long as you use the "key pad" numbers, most of these will work. The numbers along the top of the standard key board WILL NOT work. Hold down the Alt key eand enter the numbers using the key pad. On note books and some laptops the key pad is near the middle of the keyboard using special function keys to access them as noted above. Here of some of the special characters available and there codes.

Alt 0162 = ¢
Alt 0169 = ©
Alt 0174 = ®
Alt 0176 = °
Alt 0177 = ±
Alt 0216 = Ø

Actually, there are roughly 127 special symbols available using this coding scheme between 0128 and 0255.

Don't assume that these special characters are the same for all fonts
used on the reader's computer. They are not. I get many GMClist
messages with font encoding errors, and I have to guess at their
special characters. Or, some software between their computer and mine
translates it as an HTML special character code and I have all kinds
of weird little numerical codes in the text. Apple computers are bad
about this--their open and close quote symbols are not standard. And
the apostrophe symbols are often not standard.

When I want to say degrees, I use this symbol: "degrees". Works every
time, and with the ASCII-encoded characters below 128 where all fonts
are the same.
