Terry,

I'm totally with you on that question- Especially with all these "failure to launch" young people I see everywhere, (my own included)

But on the other hand, the wheels came off my life when I was 40 and I think my 80 year old mom got something out of being able to help me out a bit.

But really, the more important question; why spend $40k on a leaky deathtrap that goes down the road like a fat drunk when there are still GMC's available for less money.

Terry the question isnt so much why he thinks its ok to squat in his parents driveway - its more why THEY think its ok LOL . And from the way he writes about a warranty and maintenance (here / his neighbor) is he expecting his neighbor to address issues that come up?! Ahh but the location Slatington pa may explain , in the boonies north of allentown. They recently had a scandal up in that part of Pa involving school teachers having to have to come up with 5 grand to get a job teaching, payable to school board members, bunch of people got busted.

Oh I forgot, you can get a really really nice house in the Detroit suburbs right now for under $10k. Maybe I'll post him a message.

You can't get a really nice house for under 10K$, but if you are willing to work with the bank, you can pick up some foreclosures that are real value.

The next problem is commuting to some other state that has better un/under employment rate. It is locally 30%+ and bound to increase with the new taxes.

I didn't see where he was planning on doing this. Someone said In Pennsylvania?????

I think someone who fulltimes a GMC and actually parks in the cold weather for a while should talk up here.

I can say when it is cold, MY GMC has a freezer floor, and my floor is insulated by the PO.

If I were to live in it in the Winter, I would find some way to direct the furnace air flow to the floor to try to warm it up a bit.

I can understand the community trying to keep the GMC's popular but this is one case where if it has not been modified and heavily insulated, he won't like it, it will be cold and expensive.

This bit of information seems to have been left out in recommendations to him.

Popularity of the GMC will continue to be good as long as they get all the information they need to find what they want.

( Notice how he seems to comment on the great ride the GMC has.... LOL... what till he actually drives one. )

So any full timers that have spent time in the frigid north in the GMC, speak up, how well or might I say comfortable are you in your GMC.

If you can stay toasty, I WOULD BE INTERESTED in what you did to get it that way.

It's true, in places like Maricopa, etc. If you are retired that is fine, but if you work in the valley, the commute sucks.

The cookie cutter homes are crap, too. they all have 2x4 construction with 1" of polystyrene, chicken wire and stucco.

No, I'll stick with my Slump Block built home.

Terry,

I thought the same thing too at first and it prompted me to read the whole
message.

At the bottom of page 2 Barb from Livingston, TX asked:

Are your parents happy with this idea? While I love my daughter, I would
have been very upset to have them living in our driveway permanently in a
MH. There is a time when children need to leave the nest.

On page 3 he responds:

Hi Barb

Thanks for the input but I really don't need a lecture on this subject of
living at my parents but I'll give you a few reasons why I'm thinking of
this possibility.....

I'm getting a divorce (been married for 20 years)and at this time in my life
I really don't want to pay rent on an apartment nor do I want to pay another
mortgage on a home and would rather for a few years save more $$ so I can
afford a nice small home.

I'll have a nice "stash" of $$ from selling our home and don't want to blow
it all buying another house and then just be getting by with monthly
payments on home.

My mother loves the idea because at times she may want to use it for travels
to her daughters house in Virgina and other small vactions.

Her house I am welcome but I don't want to be couped up in it all day long
and need my own space so this idea seems perfect, I can help my
Mother/Father/Grandmother (all live there) out when they need me.

Rob, you make me laugh out loud. My dad pretty much gave me the three same choices. I was the oldest with 4 behind me. I chose all three of your dad's options and glad I did. While I really did not enjoy college and the USAF it sure did me good.
Now, I told my kids something a little different. "Yall stay as long as you want, I don't care. But, once you move out, don't expect to move back in". Whatever works I guess. My kids are much more educated than I am and make a lot more money than I could ever have imagined. Best of all, they gave me grandkids that love their grandpa. Very Happy
I suffered through what the boy on rvnet is going through. It is no fun. I was fortunate that I did not have to sell my home to pay anyone off though. Then, Here came Teri. Smile

Dan,

I chose door 2) and quite frankly it disappointed my Father. He wanted me to
go to college but I had enough skoolin' by the time I graduated high school.

Four years in the USAF as a Mechanical Accessories Technician gave me what I
needed to know to get a job at Hamilton Standard. Punching a clock for three
weeks made me realize that I NEEDED a college education so it was off to
night school for me. I told my Dad once that I had saved him lots of money
by doing it this way!

This whole thread actually suggests to me that people have
relationships with their parents that are between them, and nobody
outside that family knows what goes into those relationships.

I know many an aging parent who wishes their kids lived on premises or
nearby, because they need the help and don't trust or can't afford to
buy it.

Parents are as fully capable of imposing unfairly on the family
relationship as are kids. And while there are lots of kids who refuse
to grow up, there are just as many sets of parents who didn't teach
their kids to be adults.

In commenting on where this fellow fits into that spectrum, we are
only gossiping, it seems to me.

Some guy's are boys regardless of there age. (Like one of mine... Rolling Eyes ) Some parents like to have someone younger around. We do not have enough information to really say what is going on...

One of my son's and his girl (and a few cats Confused ) stayed in my '73 for a few months. It was VERY expensive to keep warm. I think apartment rent would have been cheaper than the increase in the electric bill!

I would not recommend it.
