Howard,
Generator Interlock Kits , They install quicker and cost less than
Transfer Switches or Generator Panels.
Go to the Web Site http:/interlock.com/
The new receptacle you install , will not have any power on it , until you
Plug your Cord in and then Start the Generator.
I would not modify, an extension Cord with two Male ends , but I did make a
12" cord
with two Male ends ,to use in an Emergency.
JUST MAKE SURE ,YOU PLUG IN YOUR EXTENSION CORD ,INTO THE NEW RECEPTACLE
BEFORE STARTING THE GENERATOR.

Paul,

IMHO even having a cable like that around is a hazard. You have the
knowledge and experience to handle it safely, but who knows who else may get
it and plug it into a active socket on one end?

These inlet boxes are a little expensive compared to more standard items,
but well worth that cost:

http://www.electricgeneratorsdirect.com/accessories/50-amp-power-inlet-boxes.php

This socket could be installed in a conventional box:

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200221024_200221024

Even Home Depot has one:

http://www.shoplocal.com/detaillocal.aspx?inventoryid=55240301&title=30-amp-weatherproof-power-inlet-box&originalurlreferrer=http://www.google .com/search%3fhl%3den%26safe%3doff%26rlz%3d1C1CHMI_en-USUS292US303%26num%3d30%26q%3dpower%2binlet%26start%3d30%26sa%3dN&citystatezip=31701&new zone=y

A better solution than the double-ended male cable would be to hang an
appropriate female pigtail.

Hi Ken and Paul,

I am saving everything to file to do the project. Thanks for the additional information. Much appreciated.
