G'day,

For those of you that would like to have .pdf copies of the:

1966 & 1967 Oldsmobile Toronado 3.21 to 1 Final Drive Manual (5 MB)

1966 & 1967 Oldsmobile Toronado Switch Pitch Transmission Manual (22 MB)

They can be downloaded from:

http://public.me.com/emerystora/

Wait for a few moments until you see Public(emerystora) in the column on the
left and they'll appear.

If they don't appear click on the symbol of the arrow pointing into the tray
and they will.

Highlight the file you want and click on it and another window opens, click
on Download.

They will be left posted for a couple of weeks.

Regards,
Rob Mueller

Thanks for that. the email didn't come through, but this downloaded in a jiffy. I have what I need now. One question, I removed the 9/16 retaining bolt, is the left hand shact supposed to come out easily or do I need a jacking bolt to draw it off? It does not come out.

Chris,
Once you remove the fine thread bolt, (Its a special bolt, for it has
a hole through it so don't loose it) the short shaft should slide out,
Nothing else holding it in.

Manny, something is holding that sucker in! I tried to entice it with a mallet, pry it with a board, etc. I was gentle, maybe it needs more "assistance" the RH pops right out.

The grease under the bearing caps was like molasses, probably just stuck.

If I thread a longer bolt in, do you think it will drive it off the splines, like a gear puller does? Any chance to damage what's inside doing that?

The shaft is splined to the sun gear. Does the shaft rotate?
I can't imagine that much rust holding the shaft in.
I guess you can use a longer bolt to push the shaft out.
Good luck

Lets start over.
There is what looks like a bolt screwed from the outside into the
middle of the lh shaft. Its actually a check valve and that is how it
stops from building pressure inside the final drive. The bolt holding
the lh shaft is on the inside and its torqued to 45-50 psi. In order
to take the bolt out, you either need an impact or secure the shaft
from rotating. Its also a special bolt, for it has a hole through the
middle. Once the bolt is out, there is nothing else holding the shaft
in. The splines are not a tight fit so the shaft should slide right
out.
You mentioned using a longer bolt to push the shaft out. If you can
get one three inches long, thread an inch into the shaft and tap the
head of the bolt, it should push the shaft out.
Good luck and let us know.

Manny / Chris,

Here's a copy of the parts list showing the bolt Manny is talking about. It
took forever to find the bloody thing! It's in the steering section of the
parts manual!

I tried that one, I think I need to Bolt the LH flange to something to get enough torque on that. Thanks, I'll try that sucker again.

Got it. Had to bolt a piece of unistrut to the flange to lock it down. Came loose very easily at that point.

Bearings seem ok. there was some evidence of moisture near the seals. the LH seal was very stuck to the housing. Took a bit more than usual to pop it off.

I may take it to a trans/rear end shop to get an opinion of whether it needs any rebuild or not, but everything seems to rotate freely and smoothly with no roughness.

Jeez, is everything in this thing fine-threaded??? Rolling Eyes
