well I think my fan clutch may be on the way out, when its cold the fan spinds pretty much like its attached to a idling P&W PT6A turbine engine when its at cold fast idle. something tells me its operating reverse of how its supposed to, the fan clutch should freewheel when its cold and tighten up as it warms up correct? it also takes forever to get to operational temp, which given the amount of air being moved by the fan doesnt surprise me...

ideas?

Sir: this is normal for a fan that is working. The clutch assembly has fluid in it that settles to the botton when shut off and will lock the clutch on start up until the fluid is dissapated by centrifical force. My new one takes a couple of minutes on a cool day to quiten down.

That is what we call morning sickness and still plagues fan clutches produced today.

Shan,
When you first start the GMC after a complete cooling off period, as
in overnight, you should hear a roar from the fan indicating the fan
clutch is engaged. This lasts a minute or two, then gradually ramps
down. That is the sign of a working fan clutch. It should kick in
when your water temp is around 210 - 220 and sometimes at the bottom
of an off ramp after a hard pull.
