I have my unit gutted Again (Redesign) getting ready to put in the headliner. Previous Owner had the headliner replaced, or he did it himself. When it was done Liquid Nails was used on the ribs to hold up the headliner. My question is,

Is there any reasonable way to remove the liquid nails junk from the ribs? I can't put the new headliner up clean with the gobs of glue they used. It's adding as much as a 1/4 in spots and off course it's not consistant.

I have limited options since the unit is in a storage yard where I do not have access to 120.

Thanks.

Bill, if you use a backing board will the glue really bother you? Knock off the rough stuff with an electric grinder or dremel tool. I don't know just what kind of headliner material you are using but I would not worry about the liquid nails too much, I don't think.

Oh, no 110. Fire up the Onan or grab an inverter.

Dan,

Been using Ryobi cordless tools to do everything. There is no generator in it. When I say gutted, I mean gutted. No Wiring, No lighting no generator, no walls no seats... It does have newly rebuilt and powder coated windows though.

OOPs, forgot I do have 4 wires coming from each vent fan that are hanging around.

I tried grinding and all that does is melt the crap, muck up the grinding disk or clog the sanding disk. Rotary wire brush just melts it and moves it around.

It is really mucking up the line, Even with the regular backed RV headliner material. 4x8 sheets cut to fit.

Maybe a HOT sharp gasket scraper? Harbor Freight has a glorified soldering iron with a razor blade attached to it....

Quoted from the Liquid nails website:

In general, LIQUID NAILS adhesives & caulks can be scraped off when they are softened either by:
Heating above 140°F with an electric heat gun or blow dryer.
Coating the adhesive with petroleum jelly or mineral spirits for several hours to several days. (Note that mineral spirits are not recommended for tub surrounds, vinyl, plastic, painted or varnished.)

Bill, the nice thing about liquid nails, I should say in the past was all
it took to remove was a scrapper and a good rap with hammer and it would
break away fairly clean. Matter of fact we used it many time it was used as
a temporary clamp and then a good rap would release it.
Good Luck

Thanks to all, guess I'll sharpen up my gasket scraper and get out "Henry" (wood mallet made from a hank aaron baseball bat") and go to town. Don't want to use a flame, and a heat gun or hot scraper require 120.

This is the old brown goo, not the newer formulation which seems to remove easier.

Bill,

I am probably demonstrating an acute grasp on the obvious but just in case
there is a newbie out there reading this I wanted to mention that the spray
foam insulation in the GMC is flammable!

Rob,

I appreciate your grasp of the obvious, and Thank You for pointing that out. I probably should have clarified why I didn't want to use anything with a flame. We've have enough GMC's succomb to the Blue Tip Devil, I don't plan on mine being one of them. BTW, As all owners should Fire suppression is being added to mine once I get to that level in my re-construction.

Again, Thanks

Use a flapper wheel on a hand grinder. Removes most adhesives and
leaves a clean surface.

Tried a flapper wheel on my cordless grinder, just heated it up and moved it around. I'm assuming this is liquid nails by the color, but who really knows. Gonna chip and scape.

Thanks to all

I would try acetone (nail polish remover). Just ventilate the area and try and keep it off you skin.

G'day,
Been there done that!
We had had our GMC for a couple of months, and after fiddling around decided to gut it from screen to screen. I found the best way to remove the liquid nails was with an old chisel and for persuasion, a mallet. My arms felt 6"longer afterwards, but it was worth it to start off with everything clean.

That tool is a knock-off of a unit made by Fein Tool
from Germany.

If the Harbor Freight version does not work you may want
to try getting the Fein scrapers, etc
I think the mounts are the same.

Tip -- do not look at the price of the Fein tools!
