Transmission guru's.

Looks like my 67 Eldo 3.21 drive unit got a little damp inside. Had some sludge on the pan, no oil, and the pan was loose. The gears are clean, but there is a tinge of rust color to it.

I have a seal kit from Manny, also sent him an email for advice, but you guys think this unit is worth using?

At the minimum I would pull the FD apart and inspect the bearings for
corrosion. The gears most likely will cleanup nicely with a solvent wash and
a rag.

Chris,

I'm probably demonstrating an acute grasp on the obvious with the following
responses.

The rust on the gears appears to be superficial; it'll get worn off pretty
quickly when you put the final drive into service.

The problem is the condition of the bearings and the planetary gear setup
inside the housing.

When you pull the seals out you'll be able to see the ends of the bearings
maybe they'll reveal a bit more.

Personally I'd open it up and if it looks good send it out to Manny for a
rebuild.

Chris,
Absolutely. You cannot and will not find a stronger unit than the
full planetary '66 & '67 3.21 final drives. I doubt that the
condensation issues you see did any real damage. But on that same
note, since it is out, now is the time for a quick tear down,
inspection, and reseal.

If you think you want to have it reconditioned, there is a fella in St.Paul MN that rebuilds the 3.21. He has all of the tools (including the case spreader tool) seals and bearings needed to do the job and his work is top notch. His name is John Biwersi and can be reached at: jbiwersi@mac.com

John has done many 3.21's including the FD's that are in Dave Lensi's, Bob Drews,....and my coach. JFWIW

Robert, that would be great! is it a softcopy?

I think it is just condensation, and here in AZ, that means not much. I may start on it today. It looks a wee bit different thatn the 3.07 that is shown in the manual for the Motorhome.

Gahh! I realized you said email after I hit send!

Looks like this one comes apart a bit differently than the 3.07. It's not readily apparant how the LH flange comes off, unless I need a 5/16-24 threaded bolt to use as a jack screw...

I'll peruse the service manual.

Thanks!

Chris,

Oh, I just figured you were living up to your signature! ;-)

Go through the manual carefully; I vaguely remember someone telling me that
you had to have needed special tools to reassemble it.

Better yet call Manny and ask him!

Fred,

Here's the Wikipedia explanation of how a differential works:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Differential_(mechanical_device)

The colored drawings on the right side of the page explain how the 3.07
final drive works. Scroll down you will come to Epicyclic differential which
explains how that type works.

GMC Maintenance Manual X-7525 has an exploded view of the final drive on
page 3C-3 that you can compare to the colored drawings in the Wikipedia
entry.

I will send you a copy of the 3.21 final drive off net so you can see what
it looks like. It has an explanation of how it works as well.
