Dan,
I just slide around on my back too. The wife thinks I should use a creeper, but I find them difficult to use and the extra couple of inches makes it harder to get under things. I also have a couple of closet shelves full of old, stained up jeans and t-shirts that I make sure I change into before I start working on anything.

Dan,
I was at the local McDonalds and a guy's Escalade would not start -- so I pull out the jumper cables and help him. Well, then he starts reaching for a couple of $ -- Later I relate the story to Cynthia, she looks at me and asks "Do you think it was because of how you are dressed?" LOL
It was my standard work on the GMC outfit -- fishing pants with holes in both knees and a sweatshirt that has lost the cuffs.
I should have taken the $....

Yeah Toby,
But you're not telling us about the grief you catch when there's grease
found in the washer (and on the delicate wash items that went in right after
the work clothes). I'll not attempt to explain how I am aware of such
things or of the consequences.

Ah, well, I anticipated that many years ago. After the first
time I noticed such residue (and the imminent
consequences), I decided next time to wash my
wear-in-public jeans or socks or perhaps, all the towels in
the house. That way, the mess left by my dirt was washed
away in the next load (usually with a "large load" and "hot"
setting so there would be more water and detergent and a
second rinse cycle), and I would be praised as a "good son"
for doing such a chore without being asked. Even in adult
years, not much is more likely to put one in good stead with
one's lady than "helping around the house" without being nagged.
I think the "hot" water setting is important. Today's cold
water washing tends to leave behind more residue. So, for
the second wash, I make sure I wash things that can be
washed hot, rinsed warm to minimize the residue.
See - no grief with little cost. I wish I could get that
kind of ROI on some of my financial investments.
Bear in mind also, that I wash parts in the dishwasher. I
figure there's no better way to get rid of certain types of
oils, etc. than with the extra hot water and superior
surfactants in dishwashing soap. I also figure that some of
the things found on dirty
dishes/pans/leftovers-in-the-refrigerator containers are
more harmful than the relatively inert greases, oils, and
dirt found on parts. All the drek goes down the drain.
Pretty, shiny parts are left. Inside of dishwasher is clean.
The dishwasher doesn't know the difference between moly
grease and salmonella.

About $6 at the farm store. For those of you who don't recognize it, it is a kids plastic sled. It's made out of some poly and is tougher than get out. Probably not available in CA or FL. We also use them when skidding logs to keep the butt end of the log from digging in.
