We are currently staying at the Vineyard campgrounds on Lake Grapevine in Grapevine, TX after staying at the Texas Motor Speedway for several days and attending the NASCAR races.

During the trip I had noticed that grease was leaking out of the outer CV joint boot. After cleaning up some of the grease I could see a small hole in the boot. So, I had a question for the GMC forum if anyone has used some sort of adhesive to temporarily plug a hole in one of these boots.

I have a spare inner and outer boot but no tools with me to remove the axle.

So, I went to the local Autozone to find a quick boot / split boot replacement. No luck. But around the corner was an O'Reillys Auto Parts. O'Reillys carried the boot but wasn't in stock at the store but he could get one from the warehouse in about 3 hours.

I ordered 2 of these and now have a spare. These cost $17 each and look to be a much better boot than the OEM replacements. The rubber is thicker, more pliable and larger with more folds to accomadate the turning of the joint.

The instructions say the boot can be changed in 45 minutes. The job took me about 2 hours but I wasn't working in a big hurry.

Also, if I was doing this again I would clean the grease off the joint, put the boot together on the the axle and then apply the grease supplied with the boot to the CV joint.

The outer replacement boot part number is 03609 made by Dorman/Motormite.

I haven't found a split boot for the inner CV joint but I would suspect that the boot failure rate of the inner boot is not near as likely as the outer.

We leave Grapevine tomorrow and head to Jackson, MS for a leisurly trip up the Naches Trace Trail.

Anyway, FWIW

it is possible to change a boot with out removing the axle
http://gmcmotorhome.info/front.html#boot

but for a temp fix, one of our 49ers (LarryS, used "Shoe Goop"

he cleaned the area with a solvent, scratched up the surface, put on 2
coats, and it last for long enough (a long time) to get home and change the
boot later ;>) Who woulda thunk.

good luck

I was looking at those, both my outter boots are shot and ned replacement, and ive been dreading having to remove the axels, buy new axel tty bolts, and such.

these are the boots that bolt up at the folds correct? they are a direct fit for eldo and toro cars. I just wish dorman made one of their solvent welded boots for our app.

don't do that, they are old stock, crack easily, (just ask me, I have BTDT)
get new boots for JimB or jimK and change them using one of these methods

http://gmcmotorhome.info/front.html#boot

My feeling is, " never mess with a good boot" always brings trouble on a VW
and on a GMC.

May as well do the bearings if you have not done them, --- they have not
been done--
and while you are there, put in the Zerk. ;>) I know, I know, I hate it
too.

Dorman also makes solid boots ( inner and outer)for replacement.

Go to the O'Reilly web site and search on CV Joint Boot.
