While attending the GMCMI rally at Pueblo, we had a few cold nights and there was some discussion about heating the coaches with electric heaters when plugged in to shore power. The point was to use the campground's energy for heat (after all we are paying for it) rather than using up your own propane. This makes sense to me, and I was wondering what types of heaters people are using.
With the Saguao Jetset rally season just starting, I would like to get an appropriate electric heater to take the edge off of some of those cold nights withuot having to run my noisy furnace.

Carl, I'm with you about using electric heaters. I have used several over the years. I bought a "Holmes 1 Touch" from Walmart several years ago and have been very happy with it. Very quiet, several settings, thermastat, and $39.95 at the time.

NOT SO !
You will find at some campgrounds, they will charge you EXTRA for electric heat or if you have a heat pump or heat strip. It is not included in the fee.

I guess we should be glad these places aren't yet asking whether we have an electric water heater?
So far I have not stayed at a campsite that charged extra for electric heat, but I am sure the day will come.

We also keep an auxillary heater in the coach. We have a Pelonis ceramic and it works great. I also made a heavy extension chord with a line voltage thermostat in it so that I can put the stat in the location I want, works super !

It's amazing how these have come down on price. I think when I purchased my Pelonis Ceramic heater I paid $89....about 10 years ago.

Carl,
We have used the 1500W cube heaters for years. When it is really cold
outside we use 2. I have a 110 vac thermostat that is wired to a
single plug outlet that controls the main heater. The small square
units that cost $20 to $30 are all you need. Like you say, "use there
power instead of your propane". You can find them at most big box and
discount stores.

I prefer a more "installed" unit as it's not a matter of if you'll tip over the electric heater, but when. (I know they have tip switches but still) I went with this Nutone unit and put it below the refer. I still have to do the final touches and cut down the 2 cabinet doors with the router. It just fits next to vacuum and needs to be slid out to change the bag. I figure this is a central enough point to get heat to the front and rear beds.

I think the Nutone is now Broan. Nice powder coated piece and the fan blows pretty well. Built in stat and I just put a 12/3 SJ 1.5' tail out the back to plug into the outlet there. Wired as 1500w 120V so it will work off the generator as well.

I'm a huge fan of the Pelonis Ceramic cube heater. I think it is the best on
the market. Very safe and quiet. If you heft both the Pelonis and others of
the same dimension you'll see the difference.

I use my overhead heat strips with good success, however I needed something to fill some empty space above the microwave. It has oscillating louvers, adjustable thermostat, remote, and timer. It is 1500W and I suck in fresh air rather than recirc. If I was in Michigan I'd probably have it setup to recirc. It's centrally located so it does an amazing job for just 1500W Think I paid about $35

Thanks Jim,
I will get an electric space heater to keep the coach warm at night. Last winter, we found the gas furnace annoyingly loud, especially when we were trying to sleep. The coach warms up very well (too well) during the day. I know the Gregg's use an electric matteress pad, another good idea. I like Bob deK's set-up too, but I don't have a space for a unit like that at the present time.
Althuogh I have never been charged extra for electric, I have run across RV parks with metered electric hook-ups. I suppose this might be what Larry was refering to.

Carl,
It doesn't take much to keep the GMC comfy inside. We have a small
ele heater and a small propane Mr Heater unit. Both work beyond well.
I like it a little chilly for sleeping.

don't forget the 12 volt electric blanket, no use to heat the whole GMC at
night when the bed will do.

What is the brand of the little heater over the microwave. Looks like a nice idea that doesn't take much space and won't be in the way. The Broan unit also looks nice.

I was afraid someone would ask--I need to go and check out the name and brochure in my GMC. I'll do it this weekend--I'm off to Pittsburg next couple of days.
