Here is the sequence from the book. I think that they have steps 1 and 3 reversed (I'm refering to the 4 spd auto scenerio):
1 Shift transmission to neutral
2 Shift transmission into drive and make sure there is no vehicle movement
3 Shift transfer case into neutral
4 Turn ignition key to unlocked off position
5 Shift transmission into park
6 Attach vehicle to tow vehicle with tow bar.
If steps 1 and 3 were reversed it would then make sense to me.
I believe the end result is supposed to be transfer case in neutral (test by putting transmission in drive and seeing that it is really in transfer case neutral) and then the trans in Park but steering in the unlocked position so it can track behind the tow vehicle. Is that correct?

John,
I have the owner's manual from my 1987 XJ right in front of me and here is what it says:
1. Shift transmission into N (Neutral).
2. Shift transfer case lever into N (Neutral).
NOTE: The 4WD light will stay on.
3. Shift transmission into D (Drive) and make sure there is no vehicle movement.
4. Turn the ignition key to the unlocked OFF position.
5. Shift transmission into P (Park).
6. Attach vehicle to tow vehicle with tow bar.
Pay close attention to step #4. You will want the engine OFF before you try to put the transmission into park. If you put the trans into park, with the transfer case in neutral, and the engine running, the parking sprag in the trans will try to stop the rotating transmission and could be damaged.
