As of January 1st 2010, all rv air conditioners as well as residential will be required by law to convert from R22 to an "environmentally friendly" refrigerant.
Dometic claims a total redesign of their air conditioners and Carrier claims something less than that.
Replacing the original still functioning Duo Therm "shaker" has not reached the top of my improvement list. But maybe it just did.
Carrier said they will still offer the low profile 15k unit with no price increase.
Given the past track record with automotive refrigerant changes, I have to wonder if the new ones will perform as well.

Rick,

Emery Stora made a presentation at Pueblo regarding air conditioning. He
noted that DuraCool was environmentally friendly.

If you are a member of GMCMI log in to the Members Only section and then go
to the technical handout section and check out his presentation.

I GA RON TEE you will learn the basics of a/c operation and all you ever
wanted to know about refrigerants!

Rick,
That applies to only new manufactured units for both residential,
commercial and automotive/RV to use an "environmentally sound"
refrigerant and not to the existing installed base. R-22 production
is not scheduled for 99.5% reduction until 2020 and will still be
available to service existing equipment. The material with the most
testing by Carrier is R-410A know trade name as "Puron". However
there are a number of other replacement for R-22 such as Duracool
-22A. The phase out will just increase the cost of R-22 until the
elimination date.

Here is the EPA HCFC Phaseout Schedule:

http://www.epa.gov/ozone/title6/phaseout/hcfc.html

So no need to go out and buy something new if your old unit is working
just fine. There is no cash for clunker for this stuff.

Yes these are hermeticly sealed systems (all metal, soldered no porous rubber hoses, O rings or rotating compressor seals with atmosphere on the other side)so they pretty much are sealed until they leak. In other works if it ain't broke----.

I'm guessing it will be R410A. I have two R410A units on the house. So far, so good...

They do run higher pressures however. Much higher in August in Phoenix.

Too bad they don't use R134A with a larger evap coil. I think that would give us the BTUh capacity we really need to cool these things.

My roof Air's will soldier on until I determine a Mini Split is in order. Lots of other things to spend $$ on right now.
