Hi folks. Our family has been RVing for a few years and we are really taken with the GMCs from the few times we have seen one on the road.. We are now looking into buying one and our seven year old thinks its a done deal given the amount of internet research we have done on it! We have had several month-long trips in the standard SOB, small C class, and I think the GMC would fit our needs very well, while also having some character and things for me to tinker with. BUT we have yet to see one up close or talk to someone about ownership .
Is there anyone in the DC area who would be happy to spend twenty minutes showing us round their motorhome so we have a better idea of what the space feels like and how everything works?
Thanks in advance
Richard Lister

G'day,
Richard, good plan! Since the winter is approaching in the USA you have
plenty of time to search. If at all possible look at a number of coaches
that have different floor plans. At the very least make sure you look at a
coach with a wet bath and a dry bath. BIG DIFFERENCE!
Here's a link to a website that will provide you with more info than you'll
probably EVER want to know:
http://gmcmotorhome.info/buygmc.html
You have not provide your "level" of mechanical skills or interest in doing
your own work but before you go look at a coach print out a copy of the
document below and bring it with you so the owner of the coach you're
looking at to see if the GMC fits your needs can walk you through it. That
way if an when you do decide to take the plunge you'll know what to inspect
/ ask.
http://gmcmotorhome.info/buyer.htm
Good luck!

the rule of thumb seems to be that you will spend 20K. you can buy one that is running well and need very little more done of 20K or you can buy a fixer for 10K and spend another 10K over time to bring it up to a good standard.
good luck and enjoy a GMC. they are wonderful machines.

Fred,
I think it depends on Richard's level of mechanical / electrical abilities,
resources, and desired level of finish as well as the state of repair of the
coach he decides to buy.
I think the $20K is more like what you'll spend on a $10K coach, been there
but not done!

Start at $3,750. You'll be surprised how fast $20k closes in!
ouch - reality hurts.

Richard, if you like to tinker, the GMC is for you. Bob has some GMC
project going all the time and then, together, we enjoy RVing other times.

Thanks for all the advice folks - you have a great community of experts here!
On the question of fixer-upper versus mostly-sorted, I could see myself spending every weekend on a project vehicle and enjoying it - but given a lack of time and space at the moment I think I am going to be looking for something that doesn't need too much doing to it. I enjoy working on old cars (I rebuilt my '71 TVR and maintained a '67 Corvette we had for a while) and love fixing things but preferably not frame rails!
I can see that choosing the right floorplan is going to be key. We have a seven year old who needs a bunk, we'd prefer a convertible double and my wife is going to want a separate shower, so that sets some parameters. Looking at the floor plans I see there is one option called a "gaucho". Is that a small bunk over a double bed? That could be perfect. Does anyone have such a thing?
Hoping to get my first look around a coach this week if I can arrange it.
Cheers
Richard

I'd say that all of these coaches are projects, just at different stages. I'm not sure they're ever complete as the GMCs lend themselves to upgrades very easily. The basic structure is quite bulletproof (you already know about frame rails), but all the inside systems are 1970s tech, and a lot has improved since then.
Take your time and look at coaches. It is a great project, and one you will enjoy (anyone who has rebuilt a TVR obviously is warped enough to enjoy one of these coaches! Now, if it had been a Morgan......?).
Enjoy the hunt, you won't be disappointed!
