last week we took the '73 gmc on a 1200 mile round trip towing the miata...........
left greer,s.c. and drove to first landing at virgina beach for two nights and then to stafford,va for three nights.....the stafford,va campground had sewer and cable hook ups but we were one of the few vehicles there less that $100k........a lot of big boys there......the gmc towed the miata just fine never even having to get into the secondaries on the q-jet(yes true).......the trans spit no fluid out and after stopping for a break I could place my hand on the radiator which was suprising.....we do have the correct thermostat......no more road wander as truck ruts did not bother the gmc, but a couple of times the wind got ruff.......it did digest 1.5 qts of oil however......9.5-10 mpg on the trip up as the tanks were filled in greer,s.c. with "real"(no ethanol) gas.....8.5-9 mpg after first fill up on 90/10 blend.........both mpg figures with miata and all of our gear in tow......................
...here are the specifics on our 1973, but are not intended to influence anyone to prepare their motorhome as such ....I just find other gmc owner's specs interesting for future improvemnts on my gmc
1973 gmc canyonlands with 120k on the original crank, rods and pistons.......................................................
stock rebuilt trans with 3.07 final.........................
new timing chain and real 3-angle valve job 3k miles ago.......
while the heads were off we surfaced the exhaust manifold flanges.........................................................
non leaking stock exhaust manifolds........................
intake manifold crossover welded closed with cast iron plugs............
1978 firebird t/a q-jet carb modified(by me) for the motorhome.......
stock points distributor with the coil mounted on the rear firewall under the hatch(away from the heat of the stock location on the cylinder head)..................................
steering box perfectly centered with the rear wheels and using the stock alignment specs......................................
65lb air in front tires and 50lb in the rears(might need a few pounds more here)..........................
it was a fun trip as we were suprised how well the gmc towed the miata at any speed and even impressed my sometimes unimpressible wife by not having to open up my tool box........................

Thanks for the report.
Please tell us more about the carb and the mods you made.
Interesting mounting the coil on the firewall.
