Due to a number of personal reasons we have narrowed our MH search to a model with twin rear beds. Looking at the floorplans, is it possible to reconfigure a rear queen to two twins? It appears that the size of the area is the same and it would be a matter of rebuilding the floor layout. Am I wrong? Are there other hidden things under the floor that might interfere?

We have been looking for a couple of years and gathering info and with retirement a couple of years away it is now time to buy and adapt it to our needs. There are some nice units out there but they are rear queen setups and that will not work for us. I really like the Royales but most seem to be a rear bath. There is a 77 Palm Beach in my price range that has possibilities but the rear bed configuration is the only issue.

Has anyone done such a change that can elaborate on the pitfalls?

Thanks

I have never owned a rear twin, but I believe the area where these twins go is somewhat "longer" (from the rear window to the bath) than you would have in the PB. Unless you are only about 5' tall, you might have very short beds. Others will know more.

Wayne-
When we decided to look for a GMC, we decided that twin beds were
important to us for personal sleeping habits and comfort. We choose a
coach that had been stretched by 2 feet and we enjoy two over sized twin
beds with walk space between them and a rear bedside table built in. No
crawling over each other at 3am. We also enjoy the extra storage in the
side to side luggage compartment underneath which extends from side to
side in the stretched area behind the generator and propane tanks.
Just look for a coach that has been stretched by 2' behind the rear wheels.

I have a 77PB. We removed the rear seats and made a permanent bed there. A double size mattress fits snugly in there which is 54x75".

So unless you are under 4'6" you will need to move the bath/refrigerator and closet/counter forward and re-jig everything.

The double works great for us.. and posture-pedic!

Wayne,
It is quite an undertaking to change the floor plan from a number 26-3
to a rear twin bed. See this link:

http://www.gmcmi.com/forms/26ftplans.pdf

It would require moving the bath module forward about 2 feet on the
one side and the closet and kitchen forward on the other side. Would
involve relocating the black plumbing and the water heater and potable
water lines, gas lines all electrical both AC & DC along with cutting
down and modifying the cabinets to fit the relocation. I have seen it
done once by one of our GMCGL members and it you done know what you
are doing you can destroy a coach, but it depends on how talented you
are. You will spend more money making the change than finding a coach
that fits your needs. JMHO!

Wayne,

I can't make it through the night without making a couple of trips to the
loo so I wanted a rear twin.

IIRC the dimensions of the rear double beds is 52-54 inches front to rear
and the full width of the coach.

Can you increase that dimension? Not without major internal renovation. You
can extend the rear of the coach which creates another set problems.

The rear twin models that I am aware of have the following dimensions;

Avion: 75 x 32
Edgemont: 77 x 34
Royale: 74 x 32

I am 73 1/2" tall and I sleep OK on in my Avions, however, when John Sharpe
was kind enough to loan me his Royal to sleep in while I was working on my
Avion in Houston I found I didn't sleep as well. One inch made a difference.

The funny thing about the Edgemont is that none of the documentation shows
that the beds were longer! I PERSONALLY verified the length of an Edgemont
twin at Michael Bozardt's shop in Houston. That Edgemont is for sale I
believe. Here's a link to his website:

http://www.gemrecs.com/

Good luck with your search.

There were models by other upfitters that had the rear twin arrangement.
Modifying a standard interior by GMC wouldn't work. It would have to have an
interior such as Coachmen did in the side-bath Royale or one of the other
companies. You just missed getting a good deal on a rear twin unit sold
recently in New York state.

David of the registry or someone else could give you a rundown on the
particular models that were built with rear twin. Basically, one end of the
bed is over the rear wheels. Someone is over the Onan while someone else
sleeps over the LP tank.

That was going to be the next question. Rob identified 3 models that had a rear twin arrangement. I was really only aware of the Royale. So what others?

Wayne,

When I was looking for my twin bed GMC there was a gentlemen in Illinois who
had a twin bed Avion up for sale. His name was Charles Boutell. IIRC it was
a very well kept coach.

Wayne,

I just remembered that there was the Roll-a-Long by Santana, GMC built a
rear twin Kingsley and I think there was a rear twin by Landau too.

The models above are rare and I think you'll be hard pressed to find one.

Sir: my imagination thinks you might could modify the bunk bed couch for full size twin bunk beds in the rear if this would be an option??

My advise tho would be to keep looking till you find one that fills your needs and use and enjoy it.

Wayne, I agree with you about the twin rear beds. When we decided to downsize from a deisel pusher we chose the GMC IF WE COULD FIND THE TWIN BED MODEL. We looked at several other designs and tried to imagine a way to change them into twin beds, but I could not come up with a solution. I do remember seeing pictures of one where they cut a notch into the closet for thier feet on one side and I forget how the other side was accomplished.
But we just kept looking and found ours in Seattle, WA. I flew to Seattle, approved, bought, and drove our '77 Kingsley twin bed dry bath the 2450 miles back to Texas. Our beds are just bearly six ft long, but I'm still glad that is the one we bought.
Our first camper was a tear drop 4X8 trailer my dad built in 1947 using plans from "Mechanix Illustrated" pulled with a bumper clamp hitch on a 1955 Chev HT. We had a 19' trailer, 20' trailer, 24' trailer, 1976 Executive motorhome, 34' trailer/slide out, 1992 Pace Arrow pusher, and then the GMC. Out of all those before, only the Executive had the twin beds and that is why we wanted that design.

thanks, Don Baker, Burleson, Texas '77 Kingsley twin bed dry bath

We had the same thoughts when looking for our Coach. We were fortunate to find a Rear Twin/Dry Bath.

There is another just like ours available at Alex Sirums GMC.
It is a one owner in (from what I understand) excellent condition.

If I had not purchased one already, I would have bought it.

we have a rear bath Royale. a PO had added a hinged extension to the berth on the right side that makes it a double bed. i can scoot out the end of the bed into the doorway and not have to climb over my wife to get out. this works for us as we wanted the rear bath/tub layout.

Actually, the ad that you are speaking of is kind of confused.
I mentioned it to Jeff and he is going to update his site.

The picture of the Coach (outside) is not the same as the pictures showing the interior. The interior is of the Coach that I bought in August. It is a 76 Edgemonte. The other Coach is not a Edgemonte. If you noticed, the outside pictures do not match, the grey/black is the Edgemonte.

Confused? I was too.

I had forgot about the bunk bed option and I just remembered why.
When we were doing the interior renovation of the 77 Eleganza II we
were undecided on the bed arrangement that we would like you use.
When we went to rallies we took pictures of everything we saw and
sometime like. It is always good to see how other have done their
coaches inside.

We went thru 4 different layouts in the back until the current one
which seems to work best for us. The first layout was the original
davos seats laid out flat with a 4" foam mattress on top, just was not
comfortable. Number 2 was a full size double pillow top mattress (yes
you can get one in the back and yes it is a royal pain in the
posterior to get it in and out). It was 16" thick and I had to build
a step stool so that the wife could get in and out of the sleeping
area. Comfy but not really practicable. Number three was a bunk bed
layout that we had seen in another coach. You know who gets the upper
and it is a real pain to get up and down at night without hurting
yourself and the wife said it was like sleep in a coffin because you
do not have a lot of vertical space to work with. That said some
people like their bunk bed layout, just didn't work for us. Number 4
we went back to the full size mattress but found a much thinner single
pillow top that was about 9" thick and put that on a tilting bed frame
to allow storage under neath. I have the front couch redone with
additional support springs and another layer of foam so that if can be
used as a bed. So we have the twin beds but I sleep in the front and
she gets the back.

There are a number of twin bed layouts out there, but they will be few
and hard to find. Overall condition of the coach will affect your
choice also. Just a word of caution on price ranges. Because of the
economy there are coaches that are in fairly good shape going for give
away prices and you may find a gem out there. But typically the lower
cost the coach the more your going to spend to bring it up to usable
condition. Jim B had just made those comments in the past week. Good
luck on your hunt for your coach.
