G’day,

When I was at Tom Hampton’s shop this past summer we removed the steering
box from Double Trouble to:

1) replace the upper seal
2) adjust it as per the Maintenance Manual

In order to perform step 2) the box must be drained and when I did so the
fluid had a pinkish tint to it. Tom noted that was probably from automatic
trans fluid. Furthermore he noted that the seals in the steering pump were
not compatible with ATF and that could be why the seal was leaking.

Rob,
I use Amsoil ATF in my PS. Amsoil claims compatibility and it's one less can of soup I gotta carry. No problems so far. I also change the oil in the PS reservoir with every oil change. Been doing that for years on my cars...never had a PS problem with the cars, no matter the milage. JFWIW
