I am in the process of replacing my water heater element. Seem to go every
two or three years, usually when I forget to shut it off when draining the
system. Installing antifreeze bypass at the same time.

Thinking of installing a timer so that it doesn't run all the time. Come
to the coach after not using it for weeks and find plenty of hot water...not
good.

The mechanical timers seem so...well 70's. Thinking of installing one of
these. Have used it on my bathroom blowers and on things like cooler lights
at a florist.

Anyone have any experience using one on the GMC? Does it handle voltage
fluctuations, etc.

Ron, Wally in Omaha, hjas a timer on his. I just bought one for mine but have not yet installed it. That is a great idea. I think my water heater has been on all week cuz I plugged in my coach when we got home and forgot about water heater, as usual. An hour should be plenty of time. I actually got one that will turn it on and off when I want.

I googled the part number and found other info. It's only rated at 1000 watts

http://yhst-85130524586239.stores.yahoo.net/220113112694.html

The wind up style they have for hte heat lamps in public showers are probably much higher rated.

Or perhaps, a heavy duty 24 hour timer that cycles on with your predicted need.

I assume the water heater is more like 1500 watts?

In which case, this relay would solve the problem

This is what we use in the 1 hour range. Rating is 20 amps.

I got the idea from the net and copied. They are available at lumberyards like Menards and Home Depot.

I having been thinking of adding a timer too, since I winterized the coach a couple weeks ago and forgot to turn off the water heater before draining. I have the 4kw 240V element in it, but I doubt it survived.

Those timers are only 30mins max, so I'm thinking that might be a bit short heat up a tank of water... I'm thinking an hour would be better.

Here is one that goes up to 24hrs in 30 min increments:
http://www.leviton.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?item=9447&section=17138

But looks like it might be a time of day timer, manual is hard to read on-line.

The digital ones seem to be 1000w/20amps. At 110v, shouldn't it be
watts=volts x amps or 2200watts?

I think the locally avaialble (home depot) timer with a relay (I have
several lying around) would work. I could also build in a manual override
switch so that I can keep it on when at a campsite with power or when Julie
throws me out..could be soon!

Ron,
When working with AC, the load rating depends on the type of load on the switch. Resistive loads such as the water heater vs inductive loads such as a motor.

1000w rating is usually also for lighting which is resistive, but lights have a very high starting current.

I'm an electronics guy so its been 30 yrs since I did much with line voltage. Others on here will correct me.

Now that is simple but effective.

Being 6'3" and #$^% lbs. I am probably going to mount it on the bulkhead
where the JCV monitor, Honda control and inverter control are mounted. I
actually removed that box when I added the automatic transfer switch and
IOTA circuit breaker and fuse box.

Picture of timer I installed in 2002. Still working and have
not lost qn eliment since installing the timer.
I usually turn it on for about 10 minutes in the morning.
Gives me at least one tank of hot water. At least this way
the element neverr gets turned on when there is no water
in the tank.

That is a simple attic fan timer. Nothing special. Available at
Home Depot and Lowes for just a few dollars.

Back in College I spent the first 3 months calculating the energy required to heat (or cool) water.. (as well as the acceleration of gravity). It pretty much put me off the Electronic course I was taking and I have never used this great wealth of knowledge yet!

I thought maybe today I'd be able to share my knowledge of heating water, but alas a single google search and there is a conversion page without calculating calories etc.
http://www.heateflex.com/html/techtools/TT3.html

Heating 5 gallons of water from 20C to 40C (104F) with a 1kw element will take about 26 minutes, give or take.

Heating it to 120F will take 40 mins.
