I need to replace my front pads. Last time I used some Metallic pads from a
parts store that is gone now... I think it was a NAPA store but not sure.
Anyway ... what are you guys recommending now? Stock size calipers by the
way.
Thanks!

Bruce,
There have been several discussions about brake pads in the past.
I don't think there was a specific decision on which was the best.
As I remember ( my remember isn't what it use to be) the Carbon
Metallic shoes had a tendency to wear the disks out a little faster
than standard pads but were they did have better braking ability.
Ceramic pads worked the best of all the pads but they had to be
hot in order to have this better braking ability. I presently have
Carbon Metallic pads on my coach and am happy with them. I have
3 sets of Raybestos Ceramic pads (new in the boxes), one of which
I will be trying the next time I need pads. To my knowledge I have
never owned a vehicle that had Ceramic pads so I don't know
how well they will work.

I put Ceramic pad on my wife's GMC Jimmy. I have standard semi-metallic pad on my Chey Blazer. There are really tow identical vehicles made in the same plant with a different name plate. Neither Laurie or I notice any difference in braking when switching between vehicles. The biggest difference we notice is the ceramic pads do not leave black brake dust all over the aluminum wheels.
When the EBC's currently on my GMC motorhome wear out, I think I'll try ceramics next.

Can someone post the mfg and model number
for some of the brake pads they like?
Maybe some price info as well.

On Ken H. unit the pads wore out prematurely since he has only 4
brakes instead of 6. It is a 23' unit.
Our yellow pad is Ceramic and it works good when cold.
We have sold almost 100 sets and have not seen any wear other than kens.
There is a break in procedure to follow that seems to help make it
function well.
They all tell me that they notice the difference and like it.
If anyone has problems, if they will address it with us , then we can
replace them .

Jim..
You must have forgotten about me!
I used a set of yellows up in less than 7500 miles... Now my use is not typical.. I live at 9300 feet of elevation and routinely have to go up or down 8% grades and I tow..
My brakes have never been right IMHO. The yellows stopped better but sure wore quickly for me..
Jim did stand up to warranty them but it just wasn't worth it to me.. I had to put new pads on In Carbondale CO to go home with.. Those NAPA pads are still on it.. I may take another shot at something different if and when the weather here breaks..
I am sitting here trying to warm up artier moving almost a foot of snow to make room for the additional that they are predicting for Wednesday and Thursday..

Speaking of pads, Any ideas on pads to use on the mid-wheel disc's?
I would prefer to not tear them down without having replacements on hand. This coach has the TSM mid-brake set-up.

I don't think I would just use a set of metallic pads. I removed a set of heavy duty metallic pads a few days ago from my 4 runner that were only 10% worn. They were eating up my rotors and causing the jitters on a hard stop. The rotors are not warped. I replaced them with Ceramic pads. I use Carbon Friction on the GMC with good results.

Buzkin..
I currently have NAPA premium pads.. They were the best I could get while the coach was on a jack in the camp ground.. I should mention... The inner wheels and suspension were just coated in brake dust.. The current pads have about 3K on them..

I have been wondering about this... just hadn't gotten to the point of making a comment.
For our GMC's, wouldn't it be better to have softer pads that wear themselves out rather than the rotors?
I would rather replace the pads every one or two years than rotors every 2 to 4 or so. With anything with rotors that are cheap and easy to replace, I would not worry about it. (As much anyway.)

Larry,
You might try this: Put on a set of new front pads, go to thru the
prescribed few-stop break-in procedure and then proceed to abuse them as
much as feasible: Accelerate to 55 mph and almost immediately apply
apply the brakes as hard as you can for a complete stop. Get out and
measure how far it took you to stop. Go back to where you started the
acceleration and do it again -- about 20 times in a couple of hours.
Now put some more new pads a center and do the whole thing all over
again. Then drive the coach for another 5,000 miles and repeat the
stopping procedure once more. I'll bet you won't get more than 20,000
miles from that set of pads either. If I was working, I wouldn't have
time for that kind of foolishness. :-)
It's doubtful that anyone else will abuse the EBC yellow pads the way I
did -- no reason to since I've already done it. I don't knock those
pads, but I also don't consider them any better than the PFC's except
for their feel when cold -- a minor consideration for me.

G'day,
When I was rebuilding the front end on Double Trouble I got rebuilt hubs,
rebuilt knuckles, and new brake disks from Dave Lenzi. I got him to ship me
the entire assemblies as I didn't want to mess with it at all.
I called him and he recommended carbon metallic brake pads. He advised that
it was most important to sand the surface of used disks to provide a "new"
surface for the pads. He noted that metal will transfer from the pads to the
disk and protect the disks from wear. He mentioned that he had done this and
measured the thickness of his disk. He noted that after "X" miles (I can't
remember how many but the number was fairly high) his disks had not worn.

Rob;
When you sanded the discs did you hand sand them or power sand them? Did you sand them radially or around circumference? Approximately what grit paper did you use?
According to the PO, my front pads have 20,000+ miles on them and they look like new with between 3/8" and 1/2" of pad still there.
I was in a GM shop today an saw a 2009 One ton Duramax with 9,000Km on it, with warped front rotors, which were being replaced on warranty. I asked the mechanic why he was not solving the problem by turning the rotors. He said for two reasons; Fixing the problem permanently, is definitely not his job and is not covered by warranty. Changing rotors until the vehicle goes off warranty will provide him with long term employment, plus provide the dealership with more income than turning the rotors. He was meticulous in cleaning the rotors, and did wire brush the pads. He figures he will get to do this 6-8 times before it goes off warranty and will replace the pad 2-3 times at the customers expense. Company policy does not allow customers to leave the shop unless the pads are greater than 50% of new. As the flat rate is 3.25 hours and he can do it in 1 and a bit, he calls this a win, win, win! The customer is happy because he got new rotors free, the dealership is happy with selling parts and labor and he is happy because of the generous flat rate. Work eight hours and get paid for 16-18. Which came first at GM; Moral bankruptcy or financial bankruptcy?
This dealership just changed hands as the previous owner went bankrupt, but the same staff are still working there.
Thanks;

Gordon, One of Jim's mechanics had a brake disk hone. It was a flat hone with balls on the end of a wire standoff. That's what we used. Sorry for saying I "sanded" them!
