We completed the wheel alignment on my coach at 8:00 p.m. last night. I
think I cranked the torsion bar adjusters 6-7 times on one side, until I
got the ride height even.
I took it out of the shop this morning and backed it up over several
full measure 4 inch by 6 inch short chunks of timber. I ran the rear
wheels back and forth over these blocks while having the Harrison 4-bag
system inflated to 120psi. After all the horror stories, I wanted to
see if I could bend it. This was not a wise move as one of the blocks
managed to flip around end on and jam itself between the two wheels on
the passenger side. Both wheels skidded as the 4 x 6 was at a 45*
angle, hooked in the tread of the tires and tight against the bottom of
the bogie box. I had to use my two bottle jacks on the frame, release
the air from the bags, let the air out of the tires and then split
pieces off the block to get it out. The shop owner was most amused at
this performance in the rain. He was even more amused when I stripped
off my filthy wet clothes and drove away in my shorts and "T" shirt. I
didn't want to get my coach dirty. The Harrison 4-Bay suspension came
out unscathed.

I do hope you recorded all that so we can all learn from it. Some may have a laugh, but that is just because they didn't think of it first.

Gordon,
Remind me:
1) what year is your GMC?
2) did you put offset bushings both "legs" of the upper control arms?
3) how much caster were you able to get?

1. 1973
2. Both offset bushings on both legs.
3. 2.25 L and 2.75 R. Caster was the maximum we could get with the ride
height set to 13.25". If I lowered the ride height, which would change
the camber, I could then get more caster, with zero camber.
As usual, I did not follow directions. The alignment guy took a lot of
time to convinced me that the caster we ended up with would make the
coach go straight on a crowned road, hands off. He also told me that if
I was running on flat roads, in the desert, without crown, he would set
the caster even. It steers very well and does go straight, hands off on
a crowned road. My only problem is with my True Tracks which appear to
be binding badly. They make a heck of a noise on any uneven surface. I
will have to fix this problem or junk them. Maybe they wear in? Maybe
I need more than 0.010 clearance between the roller and the track? They
make the same binding noise on both sides.

Dan;
I accept the fact that some of them have bent. I can only assume their
coaches are much heavier than mine and they blew a tire plus went off
the edge of the pavement or hit a very deep hole. I checked the
position of the uprights, before and after running over the blocks and
they are in the same place.
I was very surprised how little jolt I got with 120psi in the 4 bags. I
have 75psi in the center tires and 65psi in the rears. It was a long
day, but the results are well worth it.
Are you running True Tracks?

Gordon,
That's pretty good! The reason I asked is Double Trouble while being a 1975
Avion the chassis was built at GMC in November of 1974 according to Dave
Greenberg. It only has offset bushings in the back legs. The best caster Tom
Hampton could get was 1.9 Left & Right. I can't remember what he set the
front ride height at but he did set the rear higher than OEM spec which
would reduce the caster possible also. I am happy with the way it handles
but maybe some day I'll pop the upper control arms off and stick offsets in
the front legs also to see how much more caster I can get.
Thanks,

Dan,
IIRC the Harrison system bends when you try to drive the coach with one flat
tire which is no problem on the Q-bagger.
Here's some photos of a bent bracket.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=19032
Here's the fixed view:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=19033
If you look closely at the fixed view you will see the only thing keeping
the vertical bag supports apart is a small rod in the center. The Blue
Streak's PO installed this system and to prevent the bending I will weld
four pieces of steel 1/4" thick and 1" long in between the two support
plates at 6:00 / 9:00 / 12:00 / 3:00. I reckon that will take car of that
problem.

Gordon, I do not know how it happened but I have seen the Harrison bags with
a badly bent bracket. Not saying anything bad about them but I do like that
heavier bracket myself.

Gordon,
Tom set the ride height to "his spec" using the slots in the frame and it
translated to 33 inches at the center of the wheel well. The coach sits
slightly down at the rear but it's almost level.
I do have new THICK rubber blocks from Bert & Faye Curtis between the frame
and body.

I got tired of bending down and used 32.5" to the center of the wheel
well.

Rob;
I wish I had seen these pictures a couple of months ago. I always
assumed the uprights bent along with the cross plates. I still wonder

Thanks;
Gordon

Gordon,
If you have the original body/frame pads I'd say the Tin Gerbil is set at
the same ride height as Double Trouble! ;-)

I got tired of bending down and used 32.5" to the center of the wheel
well.
