If I may butt in here for another opinion no one asked for
Question- what are we really trying to do here, get the attention of potential GMC MH owners, or supply really nice pictures of GMCs on a calendar (not disputing pretty GMCs on a calendar are nice....but to what purpose).
Focus - Lets be careful to focus on the interests of potential owners (which may or may not necessarily reflect our own interests).
Who are they - many years of contacts with GMC wantabees tells me that most are "car guys & gals" like to travel, like classic looks & unique mechanical vehicles.
Where do you find these people - car shows, cruise ins, RV events.
What have I participated in this year - Vintage RV gathering at Saratoga Springs, NY, cruise ins, Antique auto flea market/car show (Hershey).
What do I do to to interest lookers - Always open house, post general GMC info on coach (some people don't want to ask) GMCers.org brochures, provide links for information, provide more information and answer more questions than you could ever imagine.
At the AACA Hershey car show/flea market there were between 20 & 30 GMCs there. Some were doggy flea market vending units, some were very nice coaches. With 9,000 flea market spots vending car stuff & 1,000 show cars & another 1,000 Antique/Classic cars for sale here is exposure that couldn't be better. I know I had many contacts, even many of those that passed by without stopping, you could see the admiration for the GMC as they carefully looked it over in passing.
Now the part that I or no one likes to hear.
We have been extremely fortunate that the survivorship of these great GMC Motorhomes has been so high.
There is however I believe a down side. With the aging of vehicles and ownership we now have a surplus of vehicles when compared to future ownership. Suvivorship has now created a supply that has exceeded and will continue to exceed market demand. We may minimized this with an effort to find new owners, but being realistic, there are just too many GMCs out there. For the poorer examples I believe that means many will be used as parts (good as parts supply, sad to see the thinning of complete coaches).
The nice ones will survive and become even more desireable , many of the the poorer ones will become parts.
Just my opinion.

Bill, what do you see at Hershey as far as aging owners and fewer buyers? that is a good test of the waters we are looking at too. i agree that our group are mostly car guys and we are no different than the Hershey crowd.

Fred,
It's true that the aging ownership of antique autos reflects the same problem as we see in GMC MH ownership. The primary difference as I see it is that antique cars have a broader interest than the very small market for GMC MHs. We might be more accurate to compare a specific brand, i.e., what is happening to Studebaker, model Ts or Packard ownership. I am most familiar with the model T membership and while the majority of ownership is probably over 50, there is a concerted effort to provide events and interests for younger folks. They seem to be somewhat successful at this as many (primarily sons & daughters of owners)are involved in the clubs.
Another interesting aspect of antique cars is that the vintage of collector car follows with the vintage of the owner. Another way of saying this is, the vintage of your first car is probably still the vintage of car you will collect. There may be many model Ts, As and early V8s out there, but the younger collectors are interested in the 60s, 70s stuff.
I suspect this may well apply to the GMC Motorhome as well :^(

Any one in the Phoenix Area have a coach they would like to show on Saturday February 6, 2010?
Go to: <http://phoenix.gov/PARKS/herievnt.html>
Go down to "Motoring Thru Time" and look at the PDF fliers.
Others in the area might help you display and show the coach. If it was closer I would help.

When i try to Promote my GMC, the idea is to new GMC owners who will enjoy preserving the coaches as much as we do, and to prevent some of the fixer uppers from becoming parts. Im 31 and everyone my age who sees and rides in my coach is amazed that its older than we are. and they love the way it rides and the admiration or the glares that we get when we go out in it.
(ive also turned them on to station wagons, as most of them hated wagons before i forced them into riding in one of mine)
Ive been trying to catch some local cruise ins, but with work and weather this year i only made it to two, one was full and the other was a rain out after Mike Stewart and i both showed up with our coaches.

Donovan, remember the rain-out car show was not a complete loss......we got to eat at the world famous(almost) Beacon drive- in in Spartanburg.........good conversation, good food and the curb hops loved the GMCs..........
next year we WILL make the car shows as we all need to get a new group interested in the GMC.........my first project is having a spare tire cover made with the something like "the classic 1973 GMC motor home" or similar logo on it........this is simply to let the motoring public know they are not just following a generic SOB...........having a 1973 license tag on the front also helps.......

Mike,
Didn;t have a chance to see all of this thread but you are right on about younger folks interested in the GMC-- I see it and field questions and help people all the time. This is actually my #1 market and customer. It's what fuels our fires and the future for the GMC is really picking up steam. Make shows, get in as an exibition class at the least and you will have a blast. If there is anything I can help your with please give me a call. My coach (JayGee) came to me from Greer SC, just around the corner from S.burg. let me know when you wanna hit a show & we can maybe mobilize the troops in your area,
Jim Bounds
