We all wore out the subject of AC units a few weeks back and someone mentioned DC AC units, to which the lot of us came up blank; however, I was browsing a 2-3 year-old sailing rag and lo and behold - it was found. A quick check to see whether they were still alive and voila - http://dcbreeze.com/

Don't get too excited - its only 5,000 BTUs.

Here's the skinny from the web site:

DC Breeze gives you:
5k Btu/hr of air conditioning in hot tropical climates
Direct 12 volt or 24 volt DC input - no inverter required
High energy efficiency
3-speed operation
Digital thermostat available

This might be a viable replacement for the dash unit, but not rooftop units - unless it stays in the great white North.

If anyone has success with this thing (it might be me in a few months), please let us all know.

The unit also draws 48 amps, that's a whole lot! I think one of the aftermarket engine-driven AC units would probably be a better choice.

Only good if you carry some sea water around for cooling it. <G>
Guess we could recirculate the water from our fresh water tank.
And on the 12 volt side:
"we need to have 384 amp-hours (at 12.5vdc) of usable storage capacity
available to us. Since we don't want to discharge the batteries more
than 60%, we will need a bank with a combined "20 hr" rating of 640
amp-hrs. If we translate this into some commonly available battery
sizes we find that, for 8 hours of continuous running we would need a
bank consisting of one of the following**;
• Three (3) 8D size batteries (20.75" x 11.0" x 11.8")
• Four (4) 4D size batteries (20.75" x 8.75" x 10.8")
• Six (6) Group 31 size batteries (13" x 6.75" x 9.8")
• Seven (7) Group 27 batteries (12.0" x 6.8" x 9.5")
• Eight (8) Group 24 batteries (10.2" x 6.8" x 9.4")
If additional power were being drawn from the bank for other reasons
(lights, refrigeration, etc), the bank size would have to be increased."

48 Amps for only 5,000 BTU and you will need a mini cooling tower to eject the heat as it has a water to water condenser. Basically a 24VDC Neslab chiller.

Fine for a cuddy cabin the size of a Truck Cab that is already on the water with endless supply of cooling water and lower temps.

BTW, the typical car unit is 3-5 Tons (HP) which is basically 36,000 to 60,000 BTU capacity. The GMC dash air just isn't plumbed well.

Thank you for your interest in the DC Breeze. The unit on our web site was designed for boats and requires a water cooled condenser.

We are designing a replacement that will have the option of an air cooled condenser. It should be available in the new year. I don't yet know the price, but it should be under $3,300. (US) I will try to let you know when I have more details. We will have no problem shipping to Canada.

We all knew it wouldn't make economic sense the minute the first person mentioned DC as the desired power source. I simply followed up and found one by accident-like.

We always refer to boats as "a hole in the water into which one throws money."

For the GMC the phrase "GMC=Get More Cash" fits quite well.

Actually BOAT is just an acronym: Break Out Another Thousand

Some often refer to the activity of cruising as - Going to exotic locations to make expensive repairs.

Boats of all types are just like RV's and the classics like our GMC's are respected for the design and quality. The only real difference is that I have heard an emergency call from an RV that was taking on water. Other than that - Same-Same.

No but the present value has no bearing on what it WOULD cost to get it repaired, only on your decision to proceed with the repair. After all it is STILL a BOAT. It is the same with our GMCs. How many here have spent more than the coach value for repairs and upgrades that they could never recover. This (boats, GMCs and hobbies in general) is a game where straight economic logic is not applied.
