Bruce Hanover is credited with taking the picture of the beautiful
Palm Beach from that link. I really like the paint scheme -
predominantly white with green on the upper half and graduated stripes.

My '76 is all green. Was this the factory paint scheme for '77 and
'78, or was this done by the owner?

Sure, that gives a curious person a starting point but how well is it working ? And I ask that sincerely as you have a unique window on the state of the inventory.

But meanwhile, prices are falling. Will they come back when the economy recovers?

The RV demographic is getting younger but as near as I can tell, this group is not.

Can we do anything proactive to reach the masses? And maybe a few more $4000 coaches will become $30,000 coaches.

Only 78 GM finished coaches had the two-tone paint scheme.

The two colors were actually Frost Green RPO41P and Medium Green RPO37S.
I have the paint codes if you'd like to match Bruce's PB.

Several of the webmaster for the clubs with online presence have linked this

No. The reason is the clubs (not all-Tidewater Crabs are the exception)
have to accomodate any FMCA member who shows up for the rally whether in
a GMC or an SOB. In Florida we have problems getting enough space for
our members (GMCs are always welcome) so we don't advertise our rallys.
TZE only club members don't want to be parked between two 40-45' SOBs.

Dave,

Usually I agree with you, but here I take exception. We in the GMCTWCs wish to promote the TZE GMC, but the "lifestyle" is more than just the coach. ....it is just as much the fellowship and friendships that we have made. Sure SOBs are welcome, those are where we will get our converts. To my knowledge, we are the only GMC club to still post our rallies with FMCA. We schedule our rallies 8 - 12 months in advance and reserve the block of rv sites of our choice that way with a deposit. you don't just show up and expect to be taken care of. All reservations and members' deposits are made thru the club not the campground. That way the club host or club membership decide who gets what sites (usually for reasons of handicap requirements). If we need additional sites most campgrounds are happy to accommedate us. ....but again, the club controls our campsites. The only time, to my knowledge, that a campground ever put someone on one of our sites was this last weekend where the campground owner placed a trailer on one of our sites without the manager's knowledge. In our after action report to the owner, he was told that if he ever wanted our business in the future this would not happen again. .....and he agreed that it was his mistake. Like I said before, we had alot of people looking over the GMCs and even some asked to look inside (when was the last time that you can remember someone going up and wanting a tour of an SOB). Do being near SOBs bother me? Not in the least, the owners usually gravitate to our coach anyway. Besides you can usually shut them off by comparing gas mileage.

One parting thought.

Last month we traveled a bit over 2500 miles in our trip from Pasadena to
Pueblo, and covered 6 states: Calif, Nev, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and
Arizona.

In all of that distance (other than in Pueblo) we saw a grand total of one
other GMC.

Before we bought our GMC, we looked at everything between VW Westfalias and
30' SOBs with slide-outs. We were ready to buy.

It was only a momentary situation of "blind-dumb-luck" that we came across
an ad for a GMC. That moment changed everything, but it could have as
easily not happened, and we'd now be in some POS-SOB.

That is why I am convinced that we, for the good of the future of all of our
clubs, need to take our option to the marketplace, the show-place, those
events where the most motor-home people show up. Let them see what we are,
a viable option, a very viable group. We have a lot to offer, but most
motor-home people just do not know about us.

You can be sure that they know about the AirStream trailers.

The Airstream group makes a big effort to show up at big RV / motor-home
events (At least 30 at the recent Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, all parked
together, right in the midst of hundreds of SOBs. They were very obvious,
very visable.

Power in numbers. Effect in numbers. Impact in numbers.

Of course it is not easy. An FMCA event may not be as much fun as a local
rally of 30 or 40 GMCs where everybody knows everybody. Where everybody
feels like "family". The point is to recognize the purpose: advertising.
No business likes to spend money (effort) on advertising, but that's what it
takes to spread the word.

All it takes is determination ... to pick one FMCA event in your region each
year, then just pay and show up.

To show them what we are ..... you have to be where they are.

Fin,

Well, some of us went and did just what you proposed with FMCA at their rally this last July at Bowling Green, Ohio. Now it's up to you and the rest of us to follow through. FMCA gave us GMCers everything we have been asking for for the last few years.
I would say that if GMCs don't start showing up at future FMCA rallies, then we as a community are just blowing smoke up our skirts and FMCA has called our bluff. The ground work for everything you have stated has been layed out at your feet.

This may sound a little different from the way this conversation is going but I just want to throw two cents worth in.

Although my 73 CL GMC is being restored little at a time right now, it's still the best thing out there for the money.

I could sit and watch my screensaver for hours on end in admiration, since it's full of you guys pictures of your GMC's. So I got the idea one day, and was wondering why when the wife and I were doing our Christmas shopping, I saw calsnders (at the kiosks in the Malls) of every classic car that ever came down the pike. I thought how nice it would be if there was a selection of calenders you could purchase with nothing but GMC's in it. So I searched for a calender printer (I'm sure they're hundreds out there.)and found one. Here's what he had to say.
Here's what I found:

This just happened to be a company up in Carle NY, www.mmprint.com.

At the time it was just a passing thought that I inquired about. I don't have the funds or the time right now to do such a project. But If someone wanted to attempt a venture like that, I would be glad to join a coop and contribute to it.

GMCES has an attractive Brochure that would look good on the inside cover.

Just some food for thought.

This could be a good fund raiser for a club. Or a 'give away' with some
advertising added, by our most favorite suppliers.

I would be interested in a GMC calender just to carry in the GMC with the brochures that I always carry. -- Of course I COULD just print out some pictures from the net.

While I do like the idea of "showing" our coaches at RV shows and rallies (Introducing RV people to the "Hot Rod" of RV's) I think the more informal car "shows" or cruises would also be a good location to promote our coaches. Introduce the Hot Rod crowd to RV's.

I would go to these as long as they have a "Beater Getting Neater" category.

This could be a good fund raiser for a club. Or a 'give away' with some advertising added, by our most favorite suppliers.

The problem isn't assembling the photos. The problem is finding 1,000 people
that wanted to pay $3.28 plus someone's time to ship the calendars, etc.

I'd join the effort, too. I'm just a bit skeptical about being able to
unload the time-sensitive item on a bunch of guys that would rather save a
nickel, if at all possible, on every $50 purchase.

Why is a commercial outfit needed to print calendars? You can easily
make calendars on iPhoto (on the Mac). Then you can either email the
file to everyone to print on their own printers (el cheapo approach),
or they can order a calendar for $19.99 from Apple's provider, all
glossy, stiff stock, and spiral bound.

Mike Lincoln
ps--You can export the calendar as a printable PDF for folks who only
have Windoze.

What does 4 over 4 mean in the quote. I read the cost as $3288 for 1000 calenders.

Make them for 2011. That way we'll have a full year to get them out. (and look at them.) It is a little late in the year for just starting on one for 2010.

You can buy a program "Calendar Creator", and produce all the calendar's you want. Input your photos, your rally dates, and print them on your printer. Color laser looks very nice, Ink Jet is very slow. Or, take your design output to Office Depot, Staples, of Fedex Kinko's, and have them do the finished project.

I like the idea of showing up at "Old Car Rallies", especially some of the beautifully restored ones. A couple of GMC's at a rally should produce some interest.

Richard,

If I understand it correctly, 4 over 4 is how your printer refers to a 4 color picture.

Byron,

I agree somewhat with you here. To try to unload a time sensitive quantity on fellow GMCers would be counter productive.
How many people do we have on the GMCnet.

Mike,

Agree, it's too late in the season to begin such an endeavor. On the other hand, it's the right time to start researching the idea for 2011 calenders..

During the holiday season we will all be out there with our families shopping. Each one of us will see many kiosks and wire racks full of calenders, from kittens to kangaroos, from classic cars to freight trains.

I feel sure that out of all of us on the net, somehow, somewhere, someone could find out where/who these distributors are, and back track and find out how to get something like this into their distribution channels. Come on now, if some hunk looking firemen can get a calender into the mainstream, why couldn't we put the nicest looking classic motorhome into that same stream of merchandise? A GMC Classic Motorhome Calender.....
The price I found was just the first. I'm sure there is probably hundreds of them out there, that might do them for a lot less.

I view this GMCnet as a huge "think tank", and I have found that there are some great minds involved.

If something like this is viable, I will be glad to contribute.
