I was wondering where you guys are buying CV outer boots these days. I have not had any luck with Napa boots since the blue one disappeared. This last one only lasted about 6K miles and came apart at the seam. Also I have noticed that the ones I have been getting lately are made in Tiawan. Just a sign of our times, or are their still some good USA ones out there?

Thanks, Phil Swanson

I got mine from Jim K. They were made by Dorman. So far I have had no issues with them.

But aren't the Dorman CV boots the sloppy universal style? Does anybody make a non universal silicone boot? I think that would be the way to go if we can find them.

I can not answer that question other than to say that we had both types at Bean Station. The GMCers that knew what they were doing with CV joints preferred the Dorman ones that came from Jim K. They said the boots were more flexible.

This is not my area of expertise so I have to go by what others say.

If you buy the boots from the Co-Op or from Jim Kanomata, you'll get
the best boots available. They keep looking for boots that minimize
service returns, and while none of the boots currently available are
as good as the originals, at least they benefit from the hard search
for something better.

Went to the Dornan site and about the only thing they have for GMC'S OR Toronado's is replacement CV axles. I understand the axel's don't work but will the inner and outer CV's work or are these the ones that have splines that don't fit?

Michael,

No, the new Toro CV axles not only are the wrong length as they always have been, they are also an ocerseas replacement with make the spline outn on the shaft off.  You cannot use the new replacement toro shafts from NAPA or anyone.  This is one of the parts that are actually easier to fix, just call one of the GMC specialty vendors and we will have the correct inner and outer CV joints exchange.  BTW, we also have upgraded boots too if you need those and double wrap bans and a rachet tool if you need one.

Give me a call if you need any of that,

Jim Bounds

The new boots I got from JimK were the Dorman 614-003 part. I can't tell you that they last more than two years because that is how long ago I fit them.

They were a real fight at the large end. I had to give up on trying to keep the grease out of the outer grip area - so far so good.

Yes, that's a universal boot. I prefer to use a direct replacement boot not a universal type.

Get real people.
There is not much demand for Tornado or Elderado parts.
Jim B and other GMC Specialty shops are always trying to find source
of parts that will perform best.
We get feedback from our customers so we know quickly when a part is
not desirable.

Phil,

The boots I have are NOT the universal Dorman boots though the Dorman boot does work OK.  What is a "direct replacement"?  Precision is making a boot most people use and call it the direct replacement, I used to have those but found I had some problems.  Precision made the "Super Boot" that was touted as the cat's ^%% but is no longer available.  I know you want to always "do it yourself" but I have researched boots carefully and have found what I feel is the best boot out there.

It has a complete lip at the band to help the band stay in place.  it is made of a "sticky" material that if you get the joint body dry of grease which you are supposed to do, the boot will actually stick in place to give you a good chance to get the band on.  Then,  we have a double wrap band that you use a rachet tool on that sinches down and gives more torque on the band than you could ever get on a single wrapped band of any kind.  The "sticky" boot and the double wrapped rachet bands have solved many problems with boots coming off.  Our comeback on boots falling off has dropped to nil.  I was forced to research this and feel strongly because of the results I have had.

Why scour the world, we have this better boot and double wrap bands, the boot is $12.50 each and the bands are $2, we also carry the rachet band tool if you don;t have one.  You support us by getting them from us and have a part that really will work-- no foolin.

Direct replacement does not work well for me, I want better.

For a boot!  You have to be kidding!  You sure thats not for the CV and boot?  See, thats what I'm talking about, the GMC community should really enjoy the fact you have dealers with specific parts that do not gouge customers!  Heck, even with the CV, it should not cost that much!

Jim;
As 2 of the last 4 boots I have replaced have been cut by the bands, I
wonder at the wisdom of putting more torque on the band? The boots were
less than 3 years old and had very few miles on them. The grease was
very clean. I guess time will tell if I got these ones on with the
correct pressure. I do intend to pickup a pair of spare sticky boots on
my next trip south.

The last time I changed boots( 2 1/2 years ago) I was able to get get blue super boots for both outboard boots. The wrapping was starting to yellow so they must have been NOS. As much of a paita as it is to change a boot I would for sure get my boots from Jim east or west It is cheap insurance paying the extra shipping knowing you have the best available boot that will last the longest. I find double wrapped boots put less stress on the rubber then single wrap at least on the big hole.

Gordon,

I got lucky and wound up with Super Blue boots on both DT & TBS. Being a
tool junkie I bought two of the band tools. IIRC the tool comes with
instructions to use a torque wrench on the nut that the band goes through
when you tighten the band. I'll check and verify that and let you know the
torque figure next time I'm at the workshop.
