Does anyone have a source for a kit to convert OEM rear brakes to 3"
wide
shoes?
An owner in Minnesota, "Dutch" DeVries, at one time had done this and
had
assembled kits for sale. I however, cannot find him listed anywhere
among
current lists of GMCMh vendors. Replacement hardware is required for
securing the wider shoes to the backing plate and relocating the brake
cylinder to center on the shoes.

I have the list of hardware needed to make the conversion to 2-3/4"
shoes somewhere in my files. It was first presented at a seminar by
a gentleman from your state of Texas named George Williams.
Personally, I would not recommend doing it based on my own
experience. I'm sure you know they do not give you better brakes
unless you also increase the wheel cylinder area to provide similar
brake shoe loading as with the OEM shoes. Otherwise, the only
improvement you get going from 2" to 2-3/4" shoes is longer brake
shoe life. It requires drilling out the OEM shoe anchor stud in the
backing plate and replacing it with a longer anchor bolt. Once you
make the conversion, you cannot revert back to the OEM configuration
without changing the backing plate.
I had them on my coach for about fifteen years. My troubles began
when CM shoes became available and I had to have the latest thing
going. With the wider CM shoes, I had to much brakes on the rear at
anything above normal braking, and I had numerous flat spots on my
rear two tires. That is what started me on the long expensive path
to develop the reaction bar modification I presented at Pueblo.

We stock the complete to convert to the 3" system.
You cannot just drop in the 3" shoes as it will not patk on the anchors.
Our kit will save you lot of work.
