Kay and I brought the vegemite from Australia to Pueblo at Rob's
request if you follow the instructions of any Australian on how to
spread it on your bread,toast or muffin and that is very liberaly then
you can eat it and think it is okay. The spread is very thin so much
so that you see more of the underlying butter than the vegemite. I
don't know what happened to the remainder of the large jar of vegemite
that we brought tp Pueblo, I suspect it was trashed or maybe some one
liked it.

The worse thing you can do is spread it like jam (jelly), like that
it tastes salty and beefy and most Americans like sweet tastes and
that it is not.

Surely someone else tried it with Rob's advice on spreading.

We had a hot breakfast each day supplied at our motel so did not get
to help Rob instruct the correct application of the vegemite at the
rally breakfasts.

I believe there are some sources available in USA for purchase.

0C = water freezes
100C = water boils

This metric stuff is easy.

-4C = water froze in coach pipes so is good thing I drained and added the antifreeze!

you can use Google to convert most any measurements. For this one type in: "-4 c = ? f"

You get this: "(-4) degrees Celsius = 24.8 degrees Fahrenheit"

G'day,

As you may or may not know I hold dual citizenship; American and Australian.
One of the requirements to become an Australian citizen is you must acquire
a taste for Aussie delicacies, Vegemite being one of them along with meat
pies, prawns, snags, chook, etc.

Wanting to fit in I bought some back when I was based here in the 1980's as
a Field Rep for Hamilton Standard and tried it on my morning toast. I
thought it was like peanut butter and spread it nice and thick! When I took
the first bite it was enough to gag a maggot and I spit it out! YUK!

My next door neighbours in Paddington at the time had a good laugh when it
told them what I'd done. They then made me some toast with butter and spread
a bit of Vegemite thinly on top of that. It still tasted "different' but I
kinda liked it.

As noted in the other thread I asked Peter and Kay to bring a jar of
vegemite to Pueblo which they kindly did. I made up a note instructing
people to spread just a little bit on their muffins. Unfortunately that note
disappeared after the second day. I did note that the amount in the jar did
go down and so some people tried it. I gave Terri Gregg a tiny bit of my
muffin one day and from the expression on her face it didn't appear that she
enjoyed it!

It must be noted that the REAL Australians (Aborigines) eat some REALLY
weird stuff, Goanna lizards and witchetty grubs for example. Don't think
I'll go there!

Some years back I was at a party thrown by a Scot. He had a piper there and
when it came time to eat he had the piper "pipe" the Haggis to the table. I

Jim,

Now I don't want to start the "food wars" but to me grits really don't have
much taste to them. You could put a very small dollop on top of the grits
and stir it in. It would make the grits taste salty and meaty.

Personally, I like the stuff. Every morning I take a toasted bagel, put a fair amount of butter on it, then add a THIN coating of Vegemite. Been doing this for years and it hasn't killed me yet! You have to use yeast spreads sparingly, DON'T glob it on like you would cream cheese or peanut butter.

If you've never had Vegemite or Marmite, think of concentrated soy sauce with a bit more salt added. Marmite is the British stuff, almost like Vegemite but with, it seems, a touch of molasses added. If you like sushi and tend to put too much soy sauce on it then you will like Vegemite (I love sushi, just can't afford to eat it in the quantities I want to). If you don't like soy sauce or salty foods then you won't like Vegemite or any of the other yeast spreads. Soy sauce is the closest thing I can think of taste-wise, maybe soy sauce with a bit of beef broth would be more accurate, just highly-concentrated.

I buy Vegemite from several online sources. The price isn't bad when purchased by the case. I get Marmite from a British food store in Orlando, they also have Vegemite but the prices are way out of line.

GMC content: There is always a jar of Vegemite in my GMC.

DW has s jar of "green crud" that she gets from Quebec. Her father used
to make it. I think it is 'Herb Salay", salted herbs. It is added to
soup and sauces. Is this a similar product?
Sushi is easy to make for your self and very inexpensive. If you find
it too difficult, make Sashimi as it is very easy and equally
inexpensive. Anyone with 2 hands can quickly make Sashimi. Lots of
instruction on the web if you need them. I traded some 6" steel channel
yesterday for two 12 lb tuna. Sashimi and Ceviche, coming up.

It is also good for greasing bogie pins and wheel bearings but could use a little more moly in it. It think Valvoline or maybe BP is the parent company.
