Right hand (passenger side) exhaust manifold has developed a top-to-bottom crack. I tried the Permatex Metal Repair Compound, but I can already hear that it is not going to be the fix.
Does someone out there have a RH manifold for the 455 engine in decent condition, at a decent price? And can it be delivered to the GMC Eastern States Rally in Elkhart next week? I plan to be there sometime on Saturday. Alternate location would be the GMC Great Lakers Rally in Shipshewana, also being held at the same time. (Don't ask me why 2 GMC rallies are being held within 20 miles of each other at the same time - I dunno.)
I would appreciate any response to be CC'd to my email address (reo43@aol.com) as that will be quicker than the Forum. You may also call my home phone at 260-463-2247.
I will probably not have Internet access after Tuesday morning, as we will be leaving that morning for Southern Illinois Amish country near Carbondale. (We plan to stop in to visit with Arch on Friday.)
Next week is our last trip for the GMC this season, so if I don't find one this fall I will have a few months to locate one.

We have some if no one else responds to your request.
People that work on local rally have no concept of regional events and
those working on regional have the same short comings.

I posted a message earlier this afternoon and asked for an exhaust manifold. By tonight I had three offers, and one was from Jim Garman, who will be at the Elkhart Rally next week. Jim will bring the manifold with him.
Gene Fisher also posted a note:

Yes, Gene, I have read that article before. And I am following that advice - quote "When you cannot find manifolds, put on Thorley iron headers."
And because of those people who have already converted to headers, and were kind enough to offer their cast iron manifolds - I can still find them. I have Dave Lenzi's copper gaskets, and I like 'em. So for now I'll stick with the cast manifold.
Also had two offers for manifolds from CA, but these can't be delivered to Elkhart, and would have to be shipped here. Thank you Jim K and George Beckman for the offers anyway.
This is another great example of the power of the GMC Net and the helpful GMC people. What would we do without 'em?

Gene,
Your a great promoter of the Thorley Headers. I will need to mail you
a quarter. Just ribbing you.
These headers have been outstandingly reliable and are holding up.
Should there be any problems with them, let me know as there is a
strong warrenty program that I can use to help the community.

headers are the future, and the best, just depends upon where you want to
spend your time..
headers fix that, now go on to the next problem

Larry;
The most effective method I have found to reduce noise is with lead
sheet. 1 lb per square foot is almost as good as 2 pound. The problem
is to not put any nails or screws through the lead. In boats we built a
sandwich of 3/4" plywood, lead, 1/8" plywood, all glued together with
contact cement. This allowed for conversation at normal voice levels
while standing directly on top of a CAT V-8 running at 2800 rpm. The
noise from the exhaust then became the dominant noise problem. I
enclosed the pipe and muffler in a lead lined box and glued lead to the
rear cabin wall, under the textured Duradeck.
My problem with the GMC is the bolts for the seats go through the floor
and telegraph the sound. The aluminum frame around the engine hatch
presents another challenge. The firewall and heater ducts also brings a
lot of noise into the interior. I have noticed a lot more noise from
the headers than from the cast manifolds. I keep looking for leaks that
are not there, it is just the noise you get with headers.

2 lb per square foot lead is not cheap at $10 per foot. One lb is
special order and not much less. I have had good luck with contact
cement on new construction, but miserable failures on soiled wood. I am
going to try some duct board (sp?) next.

Gordon,
Agreed, adhesion to dirty, oily thirty year old plywood probably wouldn't be
too good.
To fix that I would:
1) Spray the engine compartment underside plywood with engine degreaser to
loosen the big lumps
2) High pressure wash the engine compartment underside plywood being careful
NOT to dig into the grain.
3) Spray any remaining oily areas with brake cleaner from Wal-Mart (about
$3.00 a can) until I was reasonably confident that I had gotten as much of
the oil out as possible.
4) Apply penetrating wood sealer to the engine compartment underside
plywood.
5) Paint the engine compartment underside plywood with epoxy based hi gloss
black enamel paint.
I reckon that would provide a good clean surface and the spray on contact
cement would stick like "you know what" to a blanket! ;-).
Making it stick to the sheet metal Onan compartment would probably only
require that I get the vestiges of the original foam rubber off and wash it
down with Acetone or MEK.

Rob Mueller

One thing for sure is I will look for the $3.00 a can brake cleaner.
The GM stuff I have been using is $10. The entire underside of my coach
had been meticulously covered with galvanized tin. But not the rear
bulkhead. I found another gallon of acetone during my clean-up last
week so I can get back to getting high again.
Thanks;

Gordon,
I just checked a receipt and the price I paid at the Wal-Mart in Atascocita,
Texas was $2.27 per can.

Hal;
That works well for the floor but is very hard to do on the bulkhead
behind the engine without removing the couch and dinette.
