The rear bracket for the 80 amp alt in my '73 has a slot that appears to accommodate a bolt that would go in the hole indicated by the red arrow shown here
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c347/LarryInSanDiego/GMCalt.jpg
The hole is slightly larger than 5/16" and unthreaded. Is this perhaps the wrong alt?

There should be a threaded hole there. There are two holes in that
area so you can easily miss the correct one.
It should have come with a bolt in that hole from the box

Thanks guys. The 100A alt at Kragen had a bolt in that same hole. I don't have a clue why that hole would be unthreaded. If there's enough inside clearance, I might stick a 5/16" bolt from the inside out.

Btw, no spacer needed. The raised boss is right up against the lower rear bracket. I don't have the upper one shown in your pic - something to add on the list next time I hit the Men's Mall.

All of the alternators I know of, need the spacer. The way to tell if you
need the spacer , is to lay a straight edge across the drive pulleys' to see
if the belt runs straight. Without the spacer the belt will not run
straight.

Larry:

Take the alternator back to the store where you got it. The threads have been stripped out and the re-builder didn't catch the problem. I have had several with the same problem. Sometimes the re-builder will catch it and install a threaded insert. The problem started when GM changed the design from SAE threads to metric and someone put in the wrong bolt.

Gene, I think he is trying to shove it in the wrong hole.

Okay, time for update:

I modded a 5/16" bolt head for voltage regulator and brush holder clearance (it's inserted from the inside sticking out the back).

I did this mod because this alt came with the coach when I bought it 3 years ago and it's obviously used, so no exchanging it at whatever parts store. Brushes had plenty of meat and all appeared well, so back together it went and re-installed.

I verified alt alignment and parallelism - no spacer needed. That boss butts right up against the lower rear bracket. Perhaps the alt and brackets are a muttly mix by a prior PO, but everything on this combo checked out.

I'll look out for that upper rear bracket when it's MM time. That that lower rear attachment sure helped rigidity a bunch.

Thanks to all for the heads up and advice!

Btw, somewhere was mentioned about required changes for the 145 amp alt, which I'd consider when the time does come for replacing this one (80A). Can anyone point me to more info about that?
