G'day,
Ken Frey put Equal balancing beads in the Khumo tires / Alcoa wheels I have
on Double Trouble and I am very happy with the product EXCEPT for two
things:
1) The beads can get into the stem and cause the Schrader valve to stick
open.
2) You have to put a bit of pressure into the valve stem to blow the beads
out to check the tire pressure.
I found out that each packet of Equal comes with a Schrader valve that has a
little filter on it. I screwed the Schrader valve out of one wheel on Double
Trouble to see if it had the filter and it did not.
I called Ken to find out why he didn't install them and he advised that the
filter would not fit into the valve stems on the Alcoa's.
I contacted Equal and ask them for eight filtered valve stems and ask them
if they were aware of the problem, their response was:
"We will certainly take care of your request for some Filtered Valve Cores.
I will have them sent to you at no charge today. We appreciate your
business. I would however like to talk to you about your valve hardware -
the stems themselves. We have recently become aware of an issue with
off-shore valves that are causing with any long core. These valve are not
properly bored and do not have an internal "toe stop" to ensure the cores
are held closed."
I checked my spare valve stem and it was marked: TR-543 / VENTREX / MADE IN
AUSTRIA
I took it apart and laid the "standard" Schrader valve next to the filtered
Schrader valve and it appeared that they were identical except for the small
filter. It looked like all one needed to do to make the filtered Schrader
valves work was to bore the center out slightly so the filter would fit. .
I bought enough valve stems to re-fit both GMC's from Myer Tire Supply in
Houston and will put one in my lathe and bore it out to see if it will work.
If successful I'll bore them all out.
Stay tuned to this channel for the next exciting chapter!

Just an FYI, I used Counteract Balancing beads when I put new BFGs on the front of my GMC. They've worked great and I just ordered 4 more packs to put in the new BFGs I'll be putting on the rear. I got them from a distributor in Salt Lake for a little less than $8 for a 4oz bag.
Counteract beads are supposedly manufactured in such a way that all beads are larger then the Shrader valve opening and no filter is necessary. I have found that the tire pressure measured both before and after a short burst of air into the valves is exactly the same, so their claim seems to be correct. Their website also shows magnified pictures of their beads compared to several others. The picture of the Equal product seems to verify the need to put in some air before you can get an accurate reading.

i tried the beads on my cheap tires and found them to be more than 4 oz. out. i've talked to RV owners that said the beads were OK except that the coach would shake a bit after every stop till the beads found their spot.

I installed Dyna Beads this summer with new BFG tires. I am very pleased. I also bought a new Alcoa for the spare. I found that the new filtered cores supplied with the beads would not fit the stems on the 8 year old Alcoas. The stem on the new Alcoa is a TR553 and the stems on the old Alcoas were TR543. Apparently there is some internal difference between the two. The filtered cores would not screw all the way in on the old stems. It took a while for the tire shop to get new stems. They are unique to the Alcoas.

Rick,
Darn!
The bad news is that I purchased from Meyer Tire Supply in Houston 36ea
TR543 valve stems for me and 36ea for John Sharpe (both of us have two
coaches) with the plan of drilling them out. That would allow us to change
them all and carry one spare in each of our coaches.
I will check with Meyer Tire Supply to see if I can return the TR543 valve
stems for the TR553 valve stems.
Thanks for the info!

Hi Rob
There are 3 different 553 valves. Be sure to order the proper one.

Are the rims different? Or are just the valve stems different?

Rick,
Could you please check the valve stems on yours and advise everything that
is stamped on them.
The reason being I would like to verify exactly which manufacturer supplied
the valves to Alcoa so those of us who want to run Equal balancing beads
will be able to fit the filtered Schrader valves.
Below you will find MORE information than you EVER wanted to know on bloody
valve stems for Alcoa wheels! ;-)
I did a Google search for TR553 and found:
http://www.rematiptop.com/part.php?pid=399&cid=80&sid=27
I scrolled down to Metric clamp-in valves and clicked on TR-553.
A window opened with details on this valve which listed four manufacturers.
1) Hamaton: I did a web search for Hamaton and found it was a company in
China. I looked through all the info but could not find P/N 1-553.
2) Dill: I did a search for Dill tire valves and found the following:
http://www.dillaircontrols.com/files/truck%20valves%20pg3&4.pdf
I scrolled down to:
"VS-550 Series: Used on some new Alcoa wheel applications"
Note that the valve stem has a grommet seal.
3) Haltec: I did a Google search for Haltec tire valves and found the
following:
http://www.haltec.com/
I went to Downloads and downloaded their entire catalog.
I found information on the 543 and 553 on page 16. It notes:
TV-540 SERIES, O-RING SEAL VALVES FOR ALUMINUM
TRUCK WHEELS (9.7MM VALVE HOLE)
And
TV-550 Series Features:
. Longer sealing life
. Greater corrosion resistance
. Larger sealing surface
. Hex recess in base for easier installation
. VitonTM replacement grommet - G-550
. Grommet has better temperature range and
tear resistance
. Grommet must be used on TV-550 Series only,
not for use on 540 valve series
GROMMET SEAL VALVES FOR ALCOA TRUCK
WHEELS (9.7MM VALVE HOLE)
4) Meyer: I did a search on the Meyer website using the part number 24506
and found the following info:
http://tinyurl.com/ylhs6cj
http://www.myerstiresupply.com/hop/shopexd.asp?id=1356&info=Grommet-Seal-Val
ve-TV553
I checked the receipt for the valves I got from Meyer and found the part
number was 24252. A search of their website came up with:
http://tinyurl.com/yz8we3s
http://www.myerstiresupply.com/shop/shopexd.asp?id=344&info=O-Ring-Seal-Valv
e-Straight-24-inch-HT
Summary:
1) The 543 valves have an O-ring seal
2) The 553 valves have a grommet seal
3) Both valves are for a 9.7mm hole
4) The Haltec TV-550 Series Features sounded good.
Thanks,
Rob Mueller

Rob,
On this link: http://tinyurl.com/ylhs6cj If you click on 'Haltec', Myer lists the 'TV-553c' 'TV-553d' & 'TV-553e' in two different lenghts. I guess I could take a filtered valve core down there and try it out first.

Rob;
This may not be relevant but MOTORCYCLES have a multitude of valve stems
and seal configurations. I still have guys coming for stems they can't
find for Honda Goldwings. I have a secret supplier near San Francisco.

I have a couple of spare stems so I looked very closely at one. There is no additional information as to the manufacturer. As I stated earlier, the number TR553 H-M-T 02 That is the only information on the stem. I can find out where my tire store obtained them if you like.
You are right, this is far more information than I wanted on "bloody" valve stems. But it is valuable for those of us wishing to try some of the various balancing medias. Keep us posted.

Rick,
I appreciate the follow up and no need for you to contact the tire store
where you got them; I'm going to send an email to Haltech to ask if valve
stems marked as you noted below are made by their company. If yes we're
"done & dusted." Aussie lesson for the day!
Oops! Just thought of one question: Does your spare valve have a grommet
seal or o-ring seal? It should have a grommet seal.
Thanks,
