I've always found that checking the transmission oil was an exercise in frustration. Warm everything up, find a level spot... pull out the dip stick, clean, re-insert and pull out again...
Ok.. were exactly is the oil level, there is oil on the stick but that is about the only thing I can be sure of. Its always been a very hard stick to read..
Does anyone have a trick to get a clear reading?
I understand about removing the modulator, but thats not an easy method either.

i want to try sand blasting the end of the stick. this should make the oil stick better to it. i too have trouble reading it. the oil on one side is at a different spot than the other side.

Just a little work to your dip stick will cure all. Drill a small hole
in the dipstick at the low level mark and the full mark. when you
check the level the oil will cover the drilled hole and make it easier
to see.........Terry

I sandblasted and drilled holes in mine. It helps in reading it.

Manny told me to measure the fluid after a drive of more than a few minutes. Let the engine run and open the engine cover. Shut engine off and measure the fluid; I found that very helpful and accurate. I guess it takes a minute or two at least for the converter to drain some fluid.

I'd agree that this seems to be the best way. You run the chance of overfilling if the Converter hasn't had a chance to suck up the juice.
My tranny is about dead. Hoping Manny has one to ship out soon. Weather is getting nice. Maybe I'll invite him out to "help"

Chris, When do you think you will replace your tranny? We will be heading to Quartzsite in January. I can come back by and give you a hand if you have not done it by then.
