Well, Les Schwab in Coos Bay, Oregon, wouldn't do it just last month.
Their price was $181 a tire and I was able to pick up the tires from
Discount Tire America in Bend, Oregon, for $149 plus $10 shipping for each
tire. Les Schwab charged $13.50 for mounting. However, the mounting
charge was picked up by Alcoa since I had turned my old Alcoa wheels in to
their recall. But I do like the Oregon tax............and I have nice,
new shiny Alcoa's.

Gerald;
I told the counterman the TireRack price and he said that was not
possible as it was below their cost. I asked if I could prove the price
was available, would they match it. The manager came over and said he
would. I got out my laptop, as I had bookmarked the URL, and showed
them. He said they would have to add shipping, balancing and mounting.
I showed them the $10 a tire shipping and the balance and mounting was
included. Two "E" Firestone Transforce tires, balanced and mounted cost
me $9.00 (including money exchange) more than one tire not balanced or
mounted in B.C. IIRC the total was $242. Free trade may work
somewhere, but not here.

I have to report that I did decide to stay with the 16.5" tires from
the Tire Rack. Tom Hampton strongly recommended the balancing beads
(that I still don't understand) and I'm happy with them.

Somebody referred to them as wagon wheels (after I bought mine) and
that made me worry. No need to worry. The coach rides very well. I'm
just not taking any rides in someone else's coach to prove me wrong!

I referred to them a wooden wheels. They are very hard rubber, intended
for the delivery truck business. Schwab warned me and I found them very
solid even at 65 psi. 65 psi makes them into a load range "D" tire.
The best balancing beads I can find are the PLASTIC BB Shot from
Walmart. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=6527843
$10 for 30 ounces.

Gordon,

I'm sending you a bill fo one night's sleep! My coach is driving very
comfortably, though it wanders and hunts too much.

It is so likely that I don't know what I'm missing that I'm blissfully
ignorant.

OK, I'll bite.

How do you use them as balancing beads?

How much per tire?
How to put them in the tire?

PLASTIC BB's? Are you kidding me? Did you read the reviews? They're
strictly for low speeds (Not over 275 fps)! :-)

Larry,

I think I'll do the same. Here I've been driving around on them for two
years without losing one night's sleep, now I've got to start!
Especially since I lost one of them after only a few thousand miles --
wound up with only 2 each 2-1/2" wide rings wood around the wheel (I'd
thought it was rubber). But it happened at low speed and didn't cause
any body damage. I didn't even have sense enough to replace it with
another brand, thinking it probably ran low without my knowledge. Now I
know it could do that since they're so stiff.

How much are nights' sleep worth these days? Does the fact that mine
are usually only 5-1/2 - 6 hours long matter?

PLASTIC BB's in WOODEN TIRES??!!

3 OZ PER TIRE. You have to break the tire bead. There are special
valve stems with small mesh screen available if you think getting a bead
stuck in the stem is a problem. I don't find a bead stuck in the stem
is a problem as you can take out the valve and by using a wire, push a
bead in. Please go and read some more opinions on balancing beads.
They range from beads are the greatest to beads are dangerous.

Larry;
Do you have the AT or HT Transforce? The HT is the commercial truck
tire compounded for high mileage.

For steering, you will have to do like the rest of us. Start at the
steering wheel and work your way to the wheels, eliminating all the wear
that has taken place in the last 35 years. Look at Dave Lenzi's
suspension parts. They are works of art.
I started to build a laser pointer in a piece of pipe that Emery
designed, but my friends gave me 3 construction laser devices. One of
them is a large pen with a flat surface, magnet, level and screwdriver.
It worked perfectly to find one of my bogies is not tracking. If you
go to a tracking system for the front bogies, make sure you get one that
does not interfere with the emergency brake cables or necessitate moving
the propane line to the fridge. Don't do like I did and buy the first
thing you find and assume you got something that was well designed for
easy installation.

A night's sleep can't be worth too much. Heck, a full day's pay won't
get me too far, and I'm mostly awake at work ;~}

3 OZ PER TIRE. You have to break the tire bead. ... Please go and read some more opinions on balancing beads. They range from beads are the greatest to beads are dangerous. ...

Thanks for the info. I do not think the air soft BB's are small enough to worry about them in the valve stem. I understand they are 6mm.

Reading more is good advice. I have found some very odd things about internal balancing, including someone who used 3 golf balls in each of his truck tires! I am not sure about that one, but most jeep guys seem to think that about 6 or 7oz for a tire of our size. One site says "1oz for every 13lbs of tire." I wonder if this weight includes the wheels? I suspect it would.

Mike;
We used 8oz in 22.5" tires. I have no idea why.
I can't figure out why anyone would buy $100 worth of "TIRE"
beads when $10 worth of BB's will do?

Funny - the only thing I wasn't worried about for my trip to
California was the tires. Once we got inside the state, filling up
at 3 am, I noticed one of my new Firestone's was flat. No jack-
hook. No big lug wrench.

We bought a can of fix a flat and drove home. I had the tire
repaired (and swapped with the spare) at America's Tires in Fremont.
They had never seen balancing beads before, and could only rebalance
the tire with lead weights.
