Some Pueblo thoughts.. ....

1. First..Left Friday from Peublo to Sante Fe. Easy trip. Stayed at Sante Fe Skies RV park. Also spent some time in a bar in Madrid (about 14 miles away) where they filmed some of the movie "Wild Hogs".

2. Left Sante Fe early Saturday morning, caught the end of the ballon festival "mass ascension". Pretty awesome, about 100 ballons in the sky when we went through Alberquerque.

3. Put the hammer down and went non-stop Sante Fe to SoCal. About 800 miles. Got home about 11:00 pm. Big headwinds coming across the I-40. Mileage really sucked. Used a half quart of oil and leaked a 1/2 pint of transmission fluid. Not bad and better than I thought.

4. The rally....Very well organized. Thank you to JR. Slaten and his crew.

5. The sessions were on time and very well managed.

6. Rob Mueller knows how to run a session meeting.

7. If you go to one of the sessions you like, take copious notes. Most of the good stuff comes from the "off the cuff" comments from the presenter.

8. The value of Dick Patersons engine building session is in being there. NO amount of handouts, PowerPoints or recordings can do it justice. You have to listen to Dick in person to fully appreciate what the guy does to a 455.

9. Food was tasty and filling. Morning coffee and donuts excellent.

10. Always wear your name badge or you will be scorned.

11. I didn't know that Emery Stora was such a fun loving guy.

12. Fin Beven makes great Margaritas.

13. The coaches were kind of spread out but the electrical, water, sewer connections were first rate.

14. I bought a digital converter box and an antenna and got excellent local TV reception. A government program that WORKED!!!

15. We went to Canon City and went on the Royal Gorge train ride. Very nice way to spend an afternoon.

16. Went to Colorado Springs and visited the Garden of the Gods park. Spectacular scenery.

17. Bought a combiner from JimK in the vendors area. I still don't understand some of Jim's analogy's. Hope that Jim gets his coach running as good as his pinewood derby racer.

18. Continue to thank Steve Ferguson for recommending BFG Commercial T/A tires for our coach.

19. Made some great new friends.

20. Love...Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona gas station filler nozzles, California nozzles blow!! In more ways than one.

21. You don;t have to be retired to have fun at a rally and enjoy your GMC.!!!

Thanks

Gary,
Thanks for coming by and visiting with me. Maybe next time we will have more time. That Emery is a very funny guy. He just does not portray his sense of humor via the keyboard.

Just curious about how much bushing clearance is too much. I just put the coach on blocks and let the air out of the bags. 3 of the 4 wheels can be moved noticeably, but I'm wondering how much clearance is too much. Haven't made an actual measurement, but the movement at the wheel is not a lot, but enough to make noise. I've been looking for a shop manual on eBay, but so far nothing.

All GMC owners need all the documentation they can get on the GMC.

you can and should buy this collection of DVDs for GMC documentation.

the paper versions are still available from Cinnabar

I was told that any more than 3/8 of an inch of in and out
movement of the rear wheels was too much. Look for wear
on the inter and outer edges of your rear tires. Uneven wear
on either edge is usually and indication of bogie pin and
bushing wear. measurement of movement should be made
at the centerline of the tire farthest away from he bogie.

Gary,

You definitely need manuals, as from Cinnabar or Tom Lins' CD. But it
won't help you with the bogie bushing clearance -- it's not in the
manual. At least I can't find it, nor did anyone report that they'd
been able to when we last discussed it.

That said, someone (Jim Bounds???) once told me <1/8" axial movement of
the wheel spindle. I'm not at all sure that's realistic; I think I've
had that much since 10,000 miles after new bushings.

AH! HA! So that's why we couldn't find the tolerance -- it's in the
service bulletins (GM Service Bulletin #75-TM-4 states 1/8" is
maximum!). So the 1/8" is correct (Thanks, Jim B.). I wonder if it's
in the '77 & '78 manuals?

there is an adjustment to take some of that play out and in the 73 you
might have the smaller pins which allows faster wear/more
play..........Terry

I have never before heard of an "adjustment" that is possible. How does one do that?

It is in the manual.<G>
This is not a quote or instructions.
The general idea is to take all the weight and air pressure off the
rear suspension. Then loosen the big nut, then loosen the "top hat"
the bigger nut, then tighten the "top hat" to 15/25 lbs while working
the arm up and down. This is after lubing everything and making sure
everything is free. If you still have excessive play you will need to
start looking for new bushings.
Remember this is just a general description. The manual will be more
exact............Terry

You always hate to leave a great party but I bet you guys are glad to be out of CO. Denver had a record low 27 this morning.

I'm still in Colorado. Its sunny and 75 degrees in Pueblo right now
at 5:00 pm.

Colorado is a big state, especially vertically. Where was the 27
degrees? Probably in mountain peak areas at very high elevations.

Lessee, 1/8" at the wheel spindle. The wheel spindle is maybe 17 or
18" inches from the bogie pin, and the opposite edge of the tire is
another 15" beyond that. A 1/8" play at the spindle will be very
nearly 1/4" play at the far edge of the tire. I think I only have one
that's any worse than that, and it's not that much worse. I'll put
that one off a bit longer.

You need to know where the play is.
If it in the sliding , then torque the nut .
If it is the hole clearance, you must re pin and bush
