My 76 Palm Beach has 138,000 miles on it and runs well. I just purchased the coach a month ago and haven't driven it much as I update and personalize it. I've heard that Mobil 1 is the best oil for an engine with high miles. Any feedback?

My 77, with 403 engine, has 124,000 miles, and is nourished by Mobile 1.
Maybe 1 qt. every 2,000 miles is used. It is 'pampered' miles I might add,
except for the 'trip into Laughlin Nev' where it got abused when it
accelerated to 85 mph by the time it hit the bottom". And that was with the
foot off the accelerator and hot brakes and a wife saying, "slow it down,
slow it down"!!!!! Since then, new master cylinder, and new rebuilt
brakes. No problems since.

I don't know if it is the best but I just switched from Rotella synthetic to Mobil 1. Walmart has lowered the price to 22 bux for 5 qt. jug. 15-50 is what I am using. Also put it in the VW.

lance,

"Best' is a tough one, but I first went to Mobil-1 when I read their website and saw what Gene posted. Works for me and my 455 seems to like it.

Our first coach was a Mobile 1 coach. We got it with 125K miles. Drove it for 13K more. Runs like a top. Our "new" coach has 12K on the engine. They both sound great. Can't tell the difference. So, I my humble opinion is that this is good oil for new and old. Well, the first coach had a water pump failure at 132K, so I guess Mobile 1 can't fix everything. *smile*

I use it in my new coach Onan, too. That poor old baby would smoke a bit when first fired up. Synthetic oils don't seem to produce blue smoke when there is a little oil usage. Now there is no telltale smoke to make other RVers think that I drive an ancient RV. And who knows? Maybe Mobile 1 has those tired old valve guides thinking they are new. One can dream.

Negative comments here.

The only vehicle that I have ever owned that needed engine work was one that I used Mobil one on since new. At 41,000 I was replacing a worn timing chain and gears.

If Mobil one is so good, why don't over the road trucks use it?

When synthetic oil burns it does no smoke but it leaves a deposit in the cylinders that will take a hammer and chisel to remove. Just ask Arch what happened to his engine burning Mobil one oil.

I use Rotella in all of my older engines that take heavier weight oil and my diesel tractor. I also use it in my Onan and my motorcycles. I do not use it modern engines that call for 5w30.

If you are happy with the condition of the engine then why not stay with whatever has been used in it up until now?

Many years ago I had an old Honda 350 bike. It had so many miles on it that at high revs it rattled with what my mechanic called "piston slap." I started using a synthetic oil, and heat and noise were immediately less.

Just for semantics sake both "Mobile 1" and "Rotella" are trademarks of ExxonMoblie and RD Shell corps and represent a full line of products under that name, not just one product. There are now may different Mobile 1 oils in different weights and formulas and in Rottela there is Dino and Synthetic. Now you see why you can't just call it that and expect to be comparing apples to apples. Also depending on when it was made and if it is new or old shelf stock it will have a different API designator. The 5w-40 Rotella synthetic I had stocked up on in SL CI-4 is now only available in SM CJ-4 (less ZDDP for the new diesel emissions). Mobile 1 also makes an air cooled (Harley) version that is for non catalytic engines and is high in zddp and not SM rated. They also make several "long drain interval" types. So when we state good or bad results we should speciflicly state which product we are talking about and what the API service rating and what the weight was we were using. This way we can narrow down the field and see what has produced the most trouble free results.
From what I know (picked up from others or read), synthetics have great flowability, good cleaning action, great antifoam properties and don't coke at as low a temp as dino oils. I use them in turbo cars for shutdown coking protection in the turbo. From what I know they don't 'burn' well in engines that are prone to that (gets ugly deposit wise) and they have in some cases inferior antiscuff properties. This could explain some of the comments above. I was happy with the Rotella blue jug syn 5w-40 SL CI-4 and like the reasonable price compared to the Mobile products, but now will try Rotella blue same but in the SM CJ-4. I will add a bottle of ZDDPlus to it as I won't run SM in an a non roller motor.

Fred V,

When I talked to the Mobil-1 tech on the phone, he stated that the 15W50 was the old formula for old flat tappet engines like ours. So far on our wanderings to the FMCA Rally in Bowling Green it is working well (and has been for the two years since I switched).

Correlation does not prove causation.

Because it doesn't have the detergents required to scrub soot needed
to be rated for use in diesel engines.

Any quality oil changed as often as most GMC owners change it will
probably do just fine, if it has the right additive package to begin
with.

As it apparently turns out, the 15-50W and "high-mileage" oil isn't
affected by the lowered ZDDP levels. The reason is that those
requirements only apply to oil as recommended by OEM's, and the OEM's
all recommend 0W30 and 5W30. The thicker oils we usually use don't
fall under the requirements for OEM oils.

Rick, Jim.
i understand what you are saying BUT the link Gene showed:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=30072
says it is rated SL/SM even though it is 15-50 weight. this seems to be in conflict with what everyone has been saying about the ratings. if it says SL/SM you go by the latest letter for the rating; in this case SM.
am i missing something?

I use Mobil 1 15w-50 in my Lotus Turbo Esprit and my race car, its a good oil for turbocharged and high output engines that run at higher temperatures/rpm levels (over 7000).

However , I have been using Wal-Mart Tech 2000 10w-30 oil in both my Buick Roadmaster estate and my wifes Range Rover Classic for over 10 years with no oil related problems, so for the past year I have been using Tech 2000 15w-40 diesel oil in the GMC II also with no problems.

I had to remove the oil pan on the Buick last year to fix some rust holes it had so I pulled the main and rod bearing caps to inspect the bearings and they looked like new.

I started using the Tech 2000 10 years ago when I was going through a difficult time financially , but have since realised its a perfectly adequate oil for my fleet of naturally asperated v8 engined car/truck/motorhome and there would be no advantage in switching to a more expensive more advertised brand of oil.

It would be great If they made a 15w-50 synthetic, I would put it in the Lotus and the racecar with no hesitation.

An oil marketer who worked for Esso once told me that the difference in price of motor oils was more down to marketing and percieved differences than actual chemical differences in the products.

Kind of like a male version of Ladies anti-aging face creams.

So If you think Mobil 1 will make your Oldsmobile V8 run better/last longer, you should use it IMO.Smile

It's also like the $1000 an ounce car wax in the walnut and velvet box. If the oil is designated by the API to get their seal, it meets spec for that service designator. So new SM off brand cheapo oil meets all the new car requirements for cars specing SM as long asy you also pay attention to weight recomondations. This also applies to Dexron and Dexcool to get that name it has to meet spec of GM. Brand of Dexron does not matter. For me the 15w-50 is a bit thick and I'm sticking with the 5w-40 so I get the 5w fast flow at cold startup and still the 40 at road load. Should be easier on the oil pump and cam and dist gears too. Might get a 1/50th MPG more too.
