When I searched last time under "tv converter ratings", the Best Buy house brand (Insignia?) came up as one of the best. When I bought mine at Best Buy, there was a big pile of them right by the entrance, so they must be OK. With the government coupon, they run $20-$30, and come with a remote and a pass through if you want to hook up a VCR or other analog signal.

Forgot to mention that the remote also has a volume control and apparently some do not. (?)

The RCA with analog pass through & remote available at Wal Mart
was one of the better ones recommended here in the net thread. I hope it was good info since I picked up two (still on the garage shelf) for my coach. I did open one of the boxes and like the fact that it is designed to be used in the vertical or horizontal position. Could be a factor for some installations (?)""
My experience with the RCA from Walmart has been excellent--very usable remote as well.

I also ran into this problem. Take what is available or wait and hope they get more. I took the Zenith DTT901 At $49.99 - $40 card. I`m happy with the $10 remote controlled converter with the controls on the box also. I went to H.H. Gregg..

I would try to find an RCA. online maybe?
From my comments back early in Nov.
>I have tried several and the $49 RCA from Walmart is the best so far, IMO.
>I wanted one that would also control the TV power, volume and mute, the RCA does it best. easy to use buttons, glow in the dark.
>The $59 Insignia from BestBuy and the Zenith from CircuitCity & Fry's are the same unit and are OK. But volume control is for the converter not the TV, not as good. Buttons are less friendly.
>The Magnavox from Sam's is $44 but lacks features.
Also tried one of the first top rated converters, TV PAL, now owned by DishNetwork. Junk, often overheated and no TV control.
just my opinion.

Dan;
Wow, I was sure your were wrong, but you are right and saved me the time
to pull my TV card off the shelf and try it. My buddy told me it was
the s**t's and gave it to me. I thought he may have not have had the
correct drivers. Now it goes in the "G" bucket and saves me fiddling.
It is a good day when you learn something and I learned "S" video is not
digital.

Hi Folks,
Got my Credit Card Credits for the Conv Box but there seems to be some marketing changes
the RCA box, supposedly marketed by WALL MART is selling the MAGNAVOX, and the RCA is ordered only if the Magnavox cannot be stocked in the warehouse.
ZENITH, which is the same ( I am told ) as INSIGNIA, is supposed to be available at Cir City, now out of business, Best Buy, not carried because of price, and Radio Shack, now carrying off brand.
INSIGNIA was carried at BestBuy but was determined too expensive and now replaced by some other brand.
KNOWN AVAILABLE UNITS NOW are SANSONIC from Target, MAGNAVOX from WallMart,
What have you guys looked for currently and found to do a good job or do the same units still rank high????, RCA, ZENITH

I know nothing about the Winegard, if you plan to use it much it might pay to go check it out in person. There is a lot of variation in the functions and ease of use of these converters.
But i would definitely pass on the SANSONIC. It does have an external "brick" for power if you prefer to go from 12v to 5. But it does not have volume on the remote, it gets very hot, has a very poor guide and is a pain to use.
The Magnavox will get you a picture.
INMO I would try to find the RCA online or call some other WalMarts.
