Is something special needed to refill an R134 system with Duracool?

Yep. The compressor lube for 134a is different than the lube for R-12 and
Duracool. If it were me, I would drain the compressor, and replace the
drier/ dessicant, then I would flush and evacuate the system for overnight
or so to double check for leaks. If there are none found, then depending
upon which compressor you have, I would refill with the correct amount of
lube, and not quite 3 cans of DuraCool. Opinions vary about pressures
needed, but I go for about 45° of air temperature between ambient and
outlet vent temperature. You can achieve greater cooling, but at the risk
of ice formation in the system. Just what I do.

One of the nice things about duracool is it is compatible with either synthetic or mineral oil. In other words it isn’t necessary to convert a mineral oil system(r12)to synthetic oil or vice versa.Duracool doesn’t care which is in the system.

Guys,
If it is a completely new system running straight Duracool, is the oil necessary?
Thanks,

Here's a link to Emery's excellent presentation on the subject.

Guys,
I have installed a new Sanden compressor, new hoses and new dryer. The condenser and evaporator are original. I installed the Duracool but did not flush the system. I have not added the compressor oil as of yet.
Should I stay with mineral oil, just add PAG 100 or clean the system and install new Duracool and PAG 100 oil.
Thanks for any opinions and input.

Is there a problem continuing to run R134a?
My coach was converted at some time before I owned it. Last week, I topped off the system with R134a using a set of manifold gauges to monitor the pressures. System took my last 2 cans, but I could use a little more to get the pressures up to where I'd like to see them. For now, I'm getting temps in the low 40's with the ambient temps around 70. Ordered a 12-pack of R134A as I need to do my boat hauling truck as well before the weather turns really hot (although this year it might not )

I don't believe there is any problem using 134a, it is just not as efficient. If it works for you, stick with it.

So, how do you flush the system? I know about evacuating it with vacuum, but this sounds different.
Our system blows cold for about 5 minutes, then warm unless we turn it off for 10 minutes or so
and turn it back on. I've replaced everything but the condenser on it. Unfortunately, the new
aluminum compressor has gotten noisy, so back to the drawing board.
As far as I can tell, the charge is correct, though I'll check it again.
My guesses at this point are: water or contamination in the system (hence the interest in flushing),
bad condenser (how do they go bad??), or a bad (newish) compressor.
I dream of someday having a fully functional GMC!
thanks,
Karen

air compressor basically. open it up and blast it out.
I also used a product for flushing, was a aerosol can and blew out some sort of solvent, but I found not much in the condenser to blow out. pretty much the solvent that came out of that aerosol shot out the other end. everything else was new, so I never tried to flush out the evaporator.

Water will boil off if you vacuum down the system so if you give it a nice long vacuuming that's one thing that can be eliminated.

Karen,
I will let you know how it goes with me. Tomorrow I am doing a complete flush. Using "TSI Supercool Air Conditioning Fast flush".
I am installing a new dryer even though the old dryer had 5 min on it. I introduced PAG oil into a system that previously had Mineral oil in the system. I never flushed the Evaporator nor the condenser. I had just installed new lines, new dryer and a new Sanden compressor.
It was my mistake. I've been draining the compressor for 2 days and have been rotating it clockwise and counter clockwise to drain any remaining contaminated oil.
From what I have learned you can not flush the compressor or the dryer, but all else is fair game.
Their are tons of "How To" videos on Youtube.
Good luck and take care,
Tom K.
