It turns out this oil filter selection lark is a bit of a minefield for a newbie like me.

I went shopping for a 1978 Oldsmobile Toronado oil filter at Rock Auto and Rock Auto gave me this list to choose from:

(403 motor)

PRO-TEC 166
PUROLATOR L20123
CHAMP / LUBER-FINER PH59
BOSCH 3423
WIX 51045
HASTINGS / BALDWIN LF230 {#B30}
FRAM PH3675
FRAM PH3506
FRAM DG3429
FRAM TG3506
FRAM TG3675
ACDELCO UPF61R {#19391148}
MOBIL M1206A
BOSCH D3423
FRAM HP20

Normally I'd have gone with the Wix but I read something about it having no anti-return valve so bought the Bosch 3423 instead.

When it arrived it looked kinda skinny compared to the oil covered fatter one that was fitted to the engine so I'm thinking maybe I bought the wrong filter?

Do I need to buy another one?

I didn't try it yet, but it looks to be 1/2 the size of the one that's on, which is a NAPA 21258. I'll probably get another NAPA even though this Bosch seems to have a lot of material in it based on it's weight.
Because of how they sit I don't think an anti-drainback valve matters.

LOTS of people on this forum use and recommend a WIX. Perhaps someone will respond with what the recommended WIX is. I think there are 2 different diametersof filters that will work OK

I've been using the Wix 51258 since 2005. The longer version of that filter is Wix 51049. JWID

Larry,
I know the Wix 51258 fits our Cad500's but wasn't sure it fits the 455 &
403 also -- does it?

The diameter of the Bosch filter is only 2-15/16" but the gasket is at the extremities. It probably will fit but it sure is skinny.....

Well, when I made the swap from 455 to Cad 500, the oil cooler adapter came over from the 455, and the filter with it. Sooooo....

The 2 Wix filters that Larry mentioned seem to be the GMC favorites. Also, it has been recommended to use a magnet on the filter to trap metal particles.

Always start with the current ACDelco number and cross from there. The big block and 77 small block take a PF24 This supersedes the AC PF30 which was same but no anti drain back ). The PF24 comes over from Buick where the filter was horizontal and had to have anti drain back. This broader use of PF24 is for the simplification of SKUs The Wix cross over would be the 51258 which has anti drainback but no integral bypass. That’s good.
The 78 small block uses the Smaller PF58 used on other small block Olds like 307, the Caddy Northstar and others. Wix is 51045. This number info is from GMCMI interchange.
If you go to wixfilters you can cross reference and see all the specs. Burst strength, microns, flow, and if it has anti drain back, or if it has integral bypass. Get it first hand and current.

If you think about the magnet, it’s in dirty oil before the media, so yes you will see some trash particles attracted, that the filter media would trap anyway, so I think it’s efficacy is falsely overrated. If the media isn’t filtering that out, you bought the wrong filter.

John L. I agree with you on the magnet.
I purchased it so I use it as an indicator of how much metal might be
coming through the oil.

This is one of the odd differences between USA and Canada, I couldn't tell you where I could go and buy a Wix filter in this city.
I have never seen one on a shelf at any of the auto parts store I frequent. According to the Wix website, the nearest dealer is about 130km away.

Do you have NAPA auto parts? Not sure, but I have heard that the Napa Gold oil filter is made by Wix. Maybe someone out there can confirm. If so, do you have Napa?
