So when I was taking the bolts off on the final drive I noticed that all of them had some RTV on the end of them. Is that a trick on making sure the cover and its bolts are sealed up tight? If so, would that be something I should try on all the transmission pan bolts?

Do not use RTV on the gasket as it has a Vent passage and we need that open.
RTV on bolts are OK,but not really necessary unless you feel it will seal
better and prevent backing off.

Jim, had my mechanic change out the oil last season but never was confident he did it correctly. It certainly has RTV on the gasket and I would not be surprised he plugged the vent hole. I have to get down there again and check. What would happen if it had been plugged?

As the final drive and oil heats up, it can blow final drive fluid out through thee weakest seal. Usually it is the final drive axle seal.

Well, when I was down there I didn’t see any signs of seals leaking except of course my transmission pan. So hopefully he didn’t plug that vent hole?

There is a bleeder hole in the transmission case on the bottom where it
joins the final drive. There is a seal on the pinion shaft, as well as a
seal in the forward end of the transmission. If either of those seals fail,
then fluid will leak from that hole. If it is red, then the transmission
seal is leaking. If it is final drive gear lube, then either that seal is
leaking, or that gasket on the final drive breather hole is blocked by
sealant or has the incorrect gasket installed on the cover.

There is a small hole at the top of the cover, make sure it is open.
Also there should be a small shield over the hole so dirt will not get
impacted in the opening.

Jim, I’ve re-read this string again and now understand better what is being said. Uggg if the internal seals have been blown out. All I can say now is there is enough RTV on the final drive cover that it was on the end of the bolts when I removed the bolts and had oozed out on some of the edges so it appears to be a healthy amount of RTV used. What I have not verified is if the vent hole has been plugged. Bob my mechanic is a good mechanic so I’d assume he was cautious of that but I’ll get under there to make sure. I’ll call you Jim and go over this with you once you get some coffee in ya.

If the cover was put on with RTV only, (no gasket) then the odds are very
good that the sealant found its way into the case vent.
The OEM gasket is a two piece sandwich with a labyrinth section that
vents the case IF THE INSTALLER OPENED THE VENT BY DRILLING A HOLE IN THE
GASKET IN LINE WITH THE CASE VENT!!
