Been reading different threads on this subject, but am not getting an answer I understand, other than I need a new charcoal canister.
Little background. I went to fill my 73 Sequoia, slow fill, gurgle, gurgle, wait, gurgle, gurgle, then the attendant let me know I was putting gas on the ground. Popped the engine cover and I see the charcoal canister with fuel pouring out.
Hence, I need a charcoal canister? From what I’ve read, need a 2 port canister. Anything I should know or am I chasing rabbits?

Find a gas station with nozzles that work right. Yours did not cancel.

Thom,
The liquid is coming through the vent system.
Your vapor separator is not working , so it must be replaced,
The manifold vacuum purges the carbon canister and remove the gas off the
carbon and brought into the intake manifold.
We supply a lot of the Vapor Separators as they do get old and non
operative.

Once you replace the separator and surrounding hoses and get the system pulling Purge vacuum through the canister, (study vacuum diagrams) the canister charcoal will purge of liquid and vapor fuel and be good to go again. You probably should change the filter on the bottom of the canister as it may be from the 70s.

I replaced mine with a junk yard option. I figured mine was 40 years old and been flooded multiple times, i doubt the charcoal was any good.
It is the same diameter, but taller. It also vents out the top so it doesnt have that filter on the bottom getting hit by the road spray.
Because Im me I put a valve in the purge line so it only purges at part throttle, based on ported vacuum, like a modern car.
I also hooked the vent line to the clean side of the air cleaner

Yeah, it's actually exactly the same part: from 70 to 74 corvette. Just google it, you'll find a source.
As to the charcoal canister, I found my 76 doesn't have one! Discovered that soon after buying it last year when I changed the oil and rechecked it after about 50 miles and found more oil than I put in! So I took off the gas cap and it was under pressure. Checked out the vent system and sure enough, the hose was blocked off and no canister. Haven't had a chance to address that yet so I have to keep the gas cap loose to prevent washing down my cylinders and contaminating the oil.
