I am trying to help new GMC friends - met because of the Blacklist. They
purcahsed a nice 1976 Palm Beach in Washington, stopped and had some work
done by DJ Eberhart and hhit the road south. Along the way, they were
unable to start the coach and had the battery and alternator replaced. The
replacement one is a 60 amp Delco made in the USA. Still having problems
later, they replaced the battery yet again. Finally, while making their way
down the coast in the Redwoods, the coach died yet again on a bad corner.
They had it towed to an electrical shop in Eureka that quoted them $200/hr
with an estimate of 6 - 7 hours to diagnose the problem. That is when they
called me (and DJ). The following is what we have done so far to
troubleshoot.

1. took reading from each of the studs on the combiner to ground
Both battery terminals read 2 v. Alt read zero
2. Took reading from alternator main stud to alternator body zero v
3. Took reading from two other wires plugged into alternator
smaller one - either brown or green, hard to tell - 2 volts when to alt.
body, zero to engine block
larger one - either white or yellow, again hard to tell zero volts

Need direction on what to check next tomorrow. Owners are learning to use a
multimeter!!

Another item - po had connected positive cable to battery to a cutoff
switch and then to battery. It is possible that one morning they tried to
start the coach with the battery "turned off"

Any help would be good. I think they are going to make wonderful new
owners, especially with their willingness to learn and their drive back to
New York still ahead.

Thanks,

Fay Curtis

It sounds like the alternator may have failed. One thing to check (with batteries disconnected) is the isolator. With the meter in the diode check mode (little symbol  that looks like ->|) place one lead of the meter of the isolator and check each of the other 2 connections, then reverse the leads. With the leads one way, you should see low resistance and with them the other way you should see VERY high resistance. Some times the isolator will fail open or shorted.

I should be around the house all day  tomorrow, Fay, you can have them give me a call. My home # is good in the 49ers roster.

Terry,

When you say isolator, do you want one lead on the finned body, the plate
it is on or ?
Thanks.

Terry,

If (when) they get back to you, get the make/model of the instrument. That way you can advise the correct set up.

This is why (the real reason) I used to give out the Hazard Fright VOMs to clients so I knew what they had and could talk them along. This really made doing diagnostics over VHF much more effective. Step back and remember to "Cookbook" the way along.

Isn't this community amazing?

Matt

Terry,
Passed on your number to them with instructions to call later today. I am
at work until possibly 5 today so can only help remotely.
I did leave them with a digital meter and showed Tim which setting it
should be on for your test.

Fay (or Faye...? Just noticed the different signature),

Where in New York are they going? I'm currently in southwest Vermont and I'll be bouncing back and forth between here and Syracuse/Rochester in the next couple or three weeks. I'd be happy to help them if I can or point them to someone nearby that can.

Matt and Terry,

I left them with a HF multimeter to use, like the one you mentioned, as I
didn't really like the one they had purchased.

I sent them a message yesterday- have not heard from them, so I figured they were finding help...

I had told them to get a good multi-meter and give me a call. to go over where to test. from what i heard they have a new alternator, it possibly could be bad, but there is other wiring that is going on with that coach that is not stock, so have to work through that.

lots of photos, and video chat. but if they have found someone local that can figure it out, that is good.

I am going to be driving alot the next few days, so if they get in a bind, have the reach out.... iphones are great as you can facetime. but you can also video chat through facebook. have helped many people remotely with the power of a good internet connection and smart phone.

I don't see where in any of this the alternator sense line and activation line (The two circuits which enter the alternator via the plug) have been tested. Failure of that plug to make contact is a known and common problem. Please make sure the turn on line has 12 volts, and the sense line is connected and working.

Johnny,

That was the measurements from the green or maybe brown wire to ground and
white or maybe yellow to ground.
Had a great electrical friend(&GMC owner) check things for them today and
he believes the plug with these two wires was put in the wrong way which
most likely killed the regulator. All other items tested out fine, so they
are heading off to a good electrical shop to hopefully get fixed up Monday.
Might just be able to get regulator fixed/replaced instead of the hunt for
a good new alternator.
Will report back when know.

The wires are listed 1 and 2. Cast into the alternator body. It has a plug
that is quite difficult to reverse, but nearly anything is possible, I
suppose. That would surely contribute to alternator failure, I suspect.
What oftentimes happens is, the plug gets damaged, so the wires are removed
from the plug, fitted with crimp on female connectors, and plugged in
individually, only bass-akwards. I have seen it all, including wires cut
off and spliced backwards. If the alternator wires can be hooked up wrong,
I expect that I have seen it. More wrong ways than right, to be sure. Pays
to check it very carefully.

So to finish out this thread, it turns out the new alternator was
malfunctioning and the diode in the isolator was also bad.
It is possible that the first shop they went to, replaced the alternator
because they didn't know about the isolator. And that the wires were
reversed then, leading to its failure. Of course, right now that can only
be speculation, but brings up the need to check before replacing parts.
They are going to have a volt meter installed and have the shop check for
any parasitic draws before continuing down the road.

I have more that once seen a bad isolator kill an alternator. Glad they got it fixed.

Fay,

Thank you for closing this one out.
This isn't the first bad rebuild I have seen from a store-front parts place.

Matt

Lemme get out my dead horse and flog it some more. Skip the voltmeter, and install an ammeter. Or put both and watch the ammeter.
