Is there a way to regulate the temp for the hot water heater on a 76 Palm Beach. Water is scalding hot!!! Not wanting to have change it out if I do not need to....

If that is the original water heater it has a thermostat that can be adjusted. It is located under the cover on the face. If the thermostat has gone bad they can be bought at Ace hardware, Home Depot and many other stores.

Emery,

I not seeing a thermostat on the face (lavatory end of hot water heater). Wiring and piping located on front face. Insulation wrapped around body.

There is a metal cover on the face Remove that and beneath it are the thermostat (called Control assembly in the manual).and the heating element.

Do you have the GMC motorhome maintenance manual X7525 ? On page 24J-20 is the Type 1 water heater with the square case and on page 24
J-21 is Type 2 with the round case. The Control Assembly is under the cover right above the heater element.

Was the water heated by the electric system or by the engine coolant loop through the water heater? If you had the engine running anytime in the previous few hours the water will be scalding hot. There is no easy way to control the engine heater loop. If was heated by the electrical element then the comments made by others are good.

To solve this on our '74 I installed a thermostatic mixer valve in the hot water line.

We have an Atwood Hot water flow controller, it senses the heat at the tank
and supplies engine vacuum to shut it down when it reaches a set temp

We have a propane water heater assisted by engine heat. When parked, we use to turn the heater on shortly before we needed hot water for washing up or dishes etc. Problem came when we would forget to turn it off before it got to hot, or forget for the whole day leaving it to relight each time the thermostat told it to do so leaving us with squalling hot water when we didn't need it. A total waste of propane. So I put a simple timer in the power circuit. When we get up in the morning or 10-15 minutes before we need hot water for dishes at dinner time, I turn the dial and it shuts itself off after 10-15 minutes which seems to be about the amount of time needed to get hot but not squalding hot water. Then I don't have to worry about forgetting to shut it off. Just tick...tick....tick...tick and off. Work for us.
