The one you have now after you take it to a local reliable rebuilder. Lifetime replacement from the chains is not a deal. You end up with a dead alternator you have to take out and take in to aget the replacement. I’m not the only one here with that opinion.

I did mine myself. Bearings and brushes. Retained all diodes and Delco regulator because old proven USA parts. All internal connections got cleaned with D5. That way I know it’s done right. Very inexpensive.

Rich,
The stock alternator is a 27SI frame that comes in 2 size (great idea delco). Ours is the smaller size. I believe that some of the later coaches came with 100 amp units. They can be built up to 130 but the frame has to be modified or something I do not recall. If you get offered a larger number physically compare it to what you have because the large version is not a drop in replacement.
If you have the house bank in the rear, it is tough to charge that from the main engine anyway.

Matt ive done hundreds back in the day but i no longer have access to a "growler" and sometimes people find unique things that work really well in an environment like this (like the new Sanden compressors) so i figured i'd ask before hand.
Matt Colie wrote on Mon, 07 September 2020 23:486cuda6 wrote on Mon, 07 September 2020 17:09I would rather keep the good older stuff and just drop a set of brushes in it etc...its still charging but im sure it could use a refreshning.

Rich,
Your gray is showing.
A growler was a tool for the armature of generators. You won't need one.
If you just put in brushes, (That takes a special tool to hold them up during assembly) you will be most of the way there.
If you have access to a lathe that can clean up the slip rings, that is nice, but it is not essential.
You may want to replace the front bearing, but those usually just slide off.
Oh, before I forget, that special tool to hold the brushes back? The best I have found is the long plastic snout from a spray can. It goes through the hole under the brushes.

New brushes come with the “tool”, a single piece of solid wire. But like Matt said the spray straw seems to work best. Rear bearing is a press fit. It can be tapped in and out easily with an appropriate socket. Build a “piece of wood with hole” tool to evenly support the rear housing so the aluminum won’t be distorted.

My personal choice is the 80 Amp as larger amps tend to put more load

Just so i'm clear, any old alternator for a TOronado will work, right? It's like $30 on RockAuto and would probably carry one if i went on a long trip.

David,
I just had to look and I am glad I did.....
The RockAuto 30$ number is a 63 Amp and according to the picture is not a 27SI. I think it is a 12SI and mounts differently. Besides, if you have a fully functional coach and the alternator quits, just start the APU and strap across the isolator.
Now Starter, that is one to worry about. A local friends just went out, but fortunately the worst is that he may miss our next lunch gathering and he knows a good local shop to rebuild it. Our starters are specific to the 425 transmission and that have been out of production for 40 years. The dangerous thing about them is that they were really too robust. They keep trying to work when they should have given up. This means that when they finally quit, they are long past quick "get you home" fixes. When they do start to have trouble (take this as serious advice), they behave just like that bad electrical connection in the starter circuit that you have been meaning to look after but she usually cranks for you. Right up until she doesn't.

I think that you guys are missing the biggest reason for going to the 100 amp alternator. It is not for getting 100 amps out of it, (you seldom need that kind of sustained electrical power) but for the higher amp capability at slow or idle engine speeds. Another thing that also helps improve low / slow speed output is going to a smaller pulley on the alternator. I have both on mine.

Dollar carburetor and electric, Gainesville GA. A bunch of old gray headed farts. One of them's sons is taking over the binniss. He's way younger, I expect we can get old stuff rebuilt as long as he can find or make the parts. Bearing, front bushing, regulator module all up under 30 dollars and easy to install.

David,
Hang on a moment.
Yes, it is 36$us (including an 18$ core), but 4 day shipping is 10$ and 3 day shipping is 31$. And all from who knows where?
So, if you are off in BFE or someplace other than an urban campground and that good old 10MT rolls snake eyes, you could be twiddling your thumbs for a while and listening for the approaching ox-cart. This is why that this is the only heavy spare I carry. We have a 23 and there is no room for things that don't matter.
Only because a faithful Black's List member we were able to get home so Mary could get to work Monday.
