About 12-15yrs ago people on this forum were promoting the use of a ceramic cloth covering on our fuel tanks to keep the tanks cool. At that time I had my tanks down and decided to glue the ceramic cloth to the tanks with the advised rubber cement. It has been on now for 12-15 yrs and suffered the elements of some 70K miles. Over time it has soaked with water and dried out countless times and is now flaking off layers of that ceramic stuff. I decided to just scrape it all off as it wasn't doing much good anyway. In several places, the cloth had released from the tank providing a place for moisture to gather where depending on conditions it maybe took a while to dry out. What I observed is, where I had missed coating the tank with rubber cement, some rust had gathered on those exposed spots. Most of the rest of the tank still had that coating of rubber cement and was pristine. No rust what so ever. That coating of rubber cement is quite tenacious as is very difficult to remove using any kind of abrasives.
So now, has anyone else ever tried coating steel expose to the elements, with rubber cement as a corrosion preventive? Any reason why one shouldn't use rubber cement on our tanks?

Very interesting......sounds like someone should do some trials...anyone bored enough to put some rubber cement on a piece of steel and put it outside to see what happens?
