Hi all,

Well it's time to change the dump valve out on the old Electra-Magic toilet but I can't get the toilet off its mounts. I took off the trim around the bottom and tried to pull the slides forward with a coat hanger as it says in the instructions, but no luck. I tried pulling on the slides with a pair of gas pliers but that didn't budge them either. Right now I'm letting a good spray of B'laster soak in.

Any other hints or tips I should try?

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,

You need a friend that has a slide hammer with a seal hook.
I'm down in New Boston, Sibley and 275.
I know where the slide hammer is, but I haven't seen the seal hook in a while.

Thanks Matt. I was able to remove the toilet.

For anyone else who might stumble onto this post later, the Electra-Magic underwent a design change between 1975 and 1976. The pre-1976 model had a stainless steel dump valve, for which replacement parts are no longer available. This model also bolted directly to the closet bolts on the toilet flange. The 1976 model changed to a plastic dump valve, which still is available as both a complete assembly and a kit of renewal parts (rubber gaskets). The 1976 model also had sliding mounting brackets that engage the closet bolts. The nuts on the closet bolts need to be set to a particular height as described in the manual. The brackets slide backward to engage and forward to disengage.

I installed a replacement Electro-Magic on my 1976 Elaganza and had min trouble getting the slides out both when I removed the original one with the metal valve and subsequently when I removed the newer one with the plastic valve. I remember it did take some force on the coat hanger hook to break the slides loose. Used the replacement unit for several years but my wife was never on board with a recirculating toilet. Installed a conventional toilet that works fine but the minimally used ElectroMagic is still sitting in my garage. If anyone is interested in it, I can ship it out for the cost of shipping and a minimal handling fee.
