I want to carry a backup/second generator. I am wondering what others might have done?
I have a Yamaha EF2200is, that is about 1' wide, 18" tall and 22" long. just a little bigger then a honda2000. What I trying to brainstorm in my head, is how to still retain ability of hauling bikes off the hitch/spare tire, and also keep the towd in place(stowmaster tow bar that drops on the 2" ball) What have people done about rain?
I am planning on having ability to run it while I drive down the road if needed(if the onboard generator fails). and still have ability to pull it off, and also keep it secure. I am not worried about the 110v hook up as I have that part figured out. I am more concerned about rain/weather, and ability to run it. I know i have seen a few people with bumper mounted generators, and I could not find them in my searching today.

I ran a Honda 3000 inverter on a rack on the back for the last decade or so. It is bolted to the rack through rubber isolators. Can't hear or feel it when it's running. If I'm in a questionable neighborhood I put a tarp or something else over it to hide it from view. I intend to move it into the compartment at some point but haven't gone there yet.

Jerred, you were my inspiration! so you don't cover the honda(or champion) in the rain?
as for my setup, I now have a 2800 onan microlite installed where the Original Onan is. I pulled new wire from the onan compartment to the generator outlet on the side of my palm beach, and installed a junction box in the upper corner. that was a splice point for the honda ev6010 I had in there for a year. But now I have a 30 amp cord leaving the onan microlite (female plug), and I installed a short male cord off that junction box, so just have the onan plugged in there, that will feed up to the normal 50 amp generator outlet. in the junction box, I have the 2 hot's wire nutted to the single hot off the 30 amp cord.
I plan on running a 30 amp cord out of that onan compartment, to my back bumper and can plug in to a bumper mounted generator as needed.(currently going to fabricate a mount up a yamaha ef2200is). Then I can just open up the side generator compartment and switch the cords there as needed.

Where are you going to mount the third generator for when number 2 quits?
I say in the front drivers side.

I really cannot understand where the ONAN 6000 watt generator got such a
bad rap. Properly tuned and adjusted, they will run longer than most of the
Owners. Cast Iron construction, robust electric stuff. If you put crank
fired electronic ignition on, along with propane fuel, you literally are
going to have an extreme duty piece of equipment. They will, if proper
maintenance procedures are observed, will outlast Generac or several other
brands in multiples of 2 or 3. But, they are not very sexy, or the quietest
unit on the market, either. If you apply the reasoning that they are all 40
years old and must be used up, what does that say for the owners?

Jim- they get a bad rap when they quit working.
I fixed mine up many times. Couple oil seals. New fuel pump. Changed the muffler. Put electronic ignition on it. Then when it quit putting out 110v when I needed it. Changes the bridge rectifier, and still no 110v.
Yanked that heavy bugger out and tore it down to find my field coil shot. Looking at $500+, or maybe find a Good used one close. Think that field coil is like 80 pounds. Shipping one in was out of the question.
I probably should of fixed it, but some other options came around. But bottom line for me, is no way can I sleep in the coach with a perfect running onan under my bed. So having a bumper mounted one I can put 50’ away from my coach if I need to is a must.

My 78 Royale 6K Onan has less than 350 hours on the clock. I put one of
Gary Bovee's electronic ignitions on it when I did a tune up at 250 hours.
I run it regularly, and it has never stopped working faithfully. The
previous owner turned the unit off with the A.C. unit still turned on, and
took his finger off the kill switch before the engine had stopped. That
killed the Bridge Rectifer, and he couldn't figure out what was wrong. He
was an industrial electrician. I just chuckled, asked for a substantial
discount, which he agreed to. At that time Duane Simmons was still alive, I
gave him a call, he gave me probable causes. Saved me a bunch of diagnostic
time. It's been running ever since, and never stops mid-stream. But, some
of those plants have been neglected and abused, never getting an oil change
or filters changed. Nothing will tolerate that. Those units will take more
than a lick and a promise to restore. Cheaper to replace them in some
cases. Sounds like that's what you had. More money to fix than a
replacement unit costs.

The generator pretty much runs anytime I'm driving and a quite a few times that I've gone camping without shore power. The inverter honda with rubber mounts underneath it is really quiet. I can't hear it run when the AC is running and can barely hear it run with the AC off and its idled down. I bought a Champion last year that looks like it will fit in the side compartment. After running that for a year, I think I'll try making the Honda fit again.
The main reason I want it inside the compartment is that the motorhome is too long to fit in the garage with it on back. Otherwise the safest, quietest, coolest position would be an enclosed area on by the rear bumper. Until now I've just had it in the weather. I had a fabric cover for a while but that didn't last long.
Honda also makes an open chassis inverter construction 2800 that's cheaper. My 3000 starts my 13.5K AC pretty easily but it won't run two of them (we tried plugging a couple in last year at the air show).
Another reason for the Honda is that it will run loooooong time on a tank of gas. It usually goes more than a day running the AC on 3.5 gallons. That's around 7 hours per gallon. I bet the Onan burns quite a bit more than that under the same loading.

A gallon an hour!? I did not know that. Alrighty then! Wonder if my
Powerhouse invertor unit would fit where the front battery is mounted?
