Because of the "Shelter in Place" situation presently in force in Oregon,
my plans for a memorable party have been scaled back some. A whole bunch,
as a matter of fact.
Any of you guys that have had direct contact with me know I love to
cook for groups. Especially groups of GMCers.
I had visions of a cajun cookout involving crawdads, sausage, corn on
the cob, chicken wings, shrimp n grits, the whole deal, for all who wanted
to come.
That ain't happening anytime soon.
So, today, Judy and I made special arrangements with our favorite
fishmonger. He is going to meet me early on the day of my birthday at 6:30
A.M at his store with some live Maine 2 pound Lobsters, some manilla clams,
and live Hoods Canal oysters in the shell. Judy and I will celebrate my
birthday alone with some great wine and Seafood, and think what SHOULD HAVE
BEEN. Wish you all could be there.

So, birthday boy, part II. Let's see. Milestone birthday. Not likely to
pass this way again, right. So, the bucket list looms large here.
Hmmmm? What is something that I kinda always wanted to do, but other,
more pressing stuff like family needs, frugality, etc. came to play.
I love to cook. For myself and Judy, for a few friends, or a whole big
bunch of folks at a GMC rally.
So, I have always wanted to cook a Maine lobster dinner, an intimate
meal for two. All the fixins'. Good wine, the whole bit. So, I went to my
local fishmonger, explained what I wanted. Arranged to meet him on Sunday
morning at O dark 30 and pick up some live Maine lobsters, Oysters in the
shell, Manilla clams, etc. This was Wednesday.
Thursday, midday, he calls. "No Joy"! He can't locate any lobsters,
but, could have some for the following weekend. Hell, that's not my
birthday! Sooo, now what. Hopes for that unique special day evaporated like
the famous Oregon morning mists.
So I grumped around, making Judy miserable, growled at the dog, etc.
As frequently happens with me, dawn comes after the darkest hours.
Hey, the internet is our friend, right? So, I googled "Live Maine
Lobster" and up pops a vendor, promises delivery in America in 24 hours, or
less. This was Thursday midday on the West Coast. Later than that in the
Eastern time zone. Just a simple credit card transaction later, I am
sitting at home waiting for the FED-EX driver to deliver my LIVE MAINE
LOBSTERS, today before 5:00 pm. Guaranteed delivery. Flown from Portland ,
Maine to Portland, Oregon. I tracked them this morning. They are due to be
on a shuttle flight to Salem today, for special delivery by truck later
today.
Only in America, right?
So, Lobster dinner for two is a go! The more practical, frugal of you
out there are sure to ask, "How Much?"
If you have to ask, I don't have a clue. How much do memories cost,
anyway? You figure it out, let me know!

Glad ya had a Happy Birthday, Jim.

-----Original Message-----
From: Gmclist On Behalf Of James Hupy via Gmclist
Sent: Saturday, May 23, 2020 9:51 AM
I woke up this morning, and was greeted by a cloudless sky, and crisp,
oxygenated air, still and quiet. A day full of promise, a gift from God.
First thing that doesn't bode well for me, is the newspaper carrier
failed to deliver my morning Gannet/USA today corporate newsletter, AKA as
the Statesman Journal. At least I didn't have to retrieve it from
underneath one of the cars in carport, or the roof. American Newspapers are
extinct, some of them just don't know it yet.
I used to know most of the reporters and production staff, and some of
the editorial staff. Those days are history. The paper isn't even printed
in Salem anymore. They sold their press facilities, and even the building.
Moved the few contract reporters to rental spaces, or they contribute by
email from home.
"Times, they are a'changin". Integrity of the printed word? It went
away as well. Enough lament.
What's a GMCer to do, can't even go camping? Polish your lugnuts, I
guess.
I have received a couple of requests for an update on my 80th birthday
dinner after the Lobster thing went sideways. So here goes.
FIRST OF ALL, I WISH TO THANK EACH AND EVERYONE WHO SENT ME CARDS IN
THE MAIL. Over 35 at last count, and still coming. Then there is the
"ecards" Some amazing ones of those, and literally several dozen PMs
flooded my inbox. A humbling experience. I had no idea the number of you
fellow GMCers out there that would take the time to send greetings to me.
From several countries as well.
Just that alone fills me with a sense of gratitude.
So, when my fishmonger called me and gave me the bad news about the
lobsters, I at first was really bummed out. Alas, woe is me, I felt let
down and disappointed. But wait, there is still the Internet, right? So,
feeling a bit hopeful, I contacted a supplier in Portland, Maine who
promised live Maine Lobsters direct to my doorstep in 24 hours or less. So,
perhaps all was not lost, after all. I got out my plastic and took the
plunge. That was last Thursday after 11:00 A.M. Pacific time. Three hours
later than that in Maine time zone. I crossed my fingers and waited. About
3:00 PCT on Friday, a FedEx driver trotted down my driveway with two large
Maine Lobsters in a special styrofoam shipping box. Very much alive and
quite anxious to be freed from that box. As I was not totally prepared to
cook them right then, Judy cleaned out the bottom shelf of the fridge, and
in they went. Of course, by then, it was raining like mad. So, we moved the
cars off the carport, I set up my propane turkey fryer on the carport, and
first thing Saturday morning, I cooked the lobsters in boiling salted
water, plunged them into an ice bath, to cool off a bit, and rinsed them
off, and back into the fridge they went till Sunday.
It was only Judy and I, and as usual, my eyes were larger than my
stomach. Don't know how many of you have cooked 2 pound Maine lobsters, but
they are BIG.
Sunday dinner was quiet and subdued. Just Judy and I. I pulled off the
lobster tails, and butterflied them, seasoned them up and stuck them under
the broiler. Judy melted a bunch of butter, I cooked fresh corn on the cob,
and Judy made a wonderful potato salad. Some wine to wash it all down with,
and we were too full to bake the Chocolate lava cakes we had planned for
dessert. That dinner was followed up with a quiet evening watching TV.
and napping. About as exciting as it gets here in quarantine. Thanks again.
I took pictures and camera video of the whole process. Anyone wants to take
a peek, I will put them up on the photo site.
