Anyone mount a Thule storage box to the roof of one of these? If you did what method did you use? Pictures?

I have given up hope on finding an original storage box as these coaches are just to rare in my neck of the woods.....improvisation is going to be the moddo i think.....lol.

Sir, I believe that the Hughes was the only GMC MH to advertise the storage box as OEM, along with sun roofs and a color TV. Since there were only 73 built chances are slim.

If you plan on mounting a roof box on the GMC I would recommend bonding the
mounting rails to the roof rather than drill and screw. ALL of the original
type roof boxes were drilled and screwed/ riveted through the roof skin
sometimes hitting a stringer but often missing. They all create another
path for water into your coach. Especially if the box leaks and fills with
rainwater.

I added a Yakima Roof Rack to my GMC.
I used Yakima Landing Pads mounted to the roof with rubber wellnuts.
If I remember correctly, I did mount them to the beams in the roof.
Then I used Yakima Control Towers and Crossbars.
I have a Yakima Space Case and made sure the distance between the Crossbars would work with the case.
I had to inset one of the mounts to clear the refrigerator vent.
The other mounts are located close to the rail.
I have a set of crossbars set up with Kayak racks, and another bare set for use with the Space Case.
it is too tight to mount the Space Case and 2 Kayaks on the roof.

Although I haven’t done this to my coach yet, I have used the Yakima system on my F250 Crewcab.

Have a look at the Yakima custom install section, where you will find the track kits. I have mounted the tracks on both the cab roof and the LEER fibreglass bed cover of my F250. I’ve carried canoes, multiple kayaks, and even my 14’ aluminum boat up there (not all at once) with no problems. The track system gives you the ability to install the appropriate racks to carry whatever you want. Racks remove easily leaving only a clean low profile track when you want nothing up there. Yakima May be pricey at the common retail prices, but used rack components often can be found on Kijiji. The tracks were not too pricey, so I chose to buy new from a US supplier.

Track installation is best done using stainless fasteners, a good sized backing plate for the inside roof surface, and a quality UV resistant sealant for the bolt holes. Good install instructions that include these details can easily be found on the web.
