Okay, this is hardly a new topic, but I just spent the last 20 minutes searching the archives and didn't get the info I needed.
It's been a while since I last did this and I can't remember whether or not I need to remove the starter in order to get enough room to pull the right front axle shaft. I just got it unbolted from the flange last night and haven't turned the knuckle yet, but there doesn't seem to be a way around it.
It's not that I mind taking the starter off, but it's a heavy thing (so I guess I do mind after all).
Thanks,

both axles can be removed fairly easily, moving the shock absorber out of the way helps. The wheels need to be turned to the lock to give enough space to get the splines out of the hub. Raise the inner end up and forward and out she comes. George Z had to show me this trick to get the drivers' side back in.

Carl,
Just like Johnny said. I did not even need to remove the oil filter. A 1/2 inch drive cordless impact driver makes the job easy.

GMC axle R&R has been "the bane of my existence". Each time I do it, it gets harder. I would like to see see avido of someone doing it efficently.
Emery did a write up a few years ago on axles which I keep on file.
http://gmc.mybirdfeeder.net/GMCforum/index.php?t=msg&th=29165&goto=232982&rid=875#msg_232982
My notes on the last time I did it.
7/26/2018 12:55 PM after much fussing, I was able to reinstall the passenger side axle by the reverse of Emery's procedure. The day before I got it out by turning the wheels to the right full and then to the left full to clear brake caliper. Took the shock off for better clearance.
The reinstall was a pain, took the steering damper off. That didn't work. Ended up taking the oil filter off per Emery's instructions and that worked. No need to take the damper off.

Thanks for all the tips guys. It was raining last evening (yay! we ate always thankful for a good rain here in the desert) so I didn't work on it. I'll try to get it out with the starter in place. It seems to me that was how I did it last time.
Again, I appreciate the help. Thanks.

Just a follow-up:
I got the right side axle shaft out this evening without removing the starter. I turned the steering all the way to the right, jacked up the control arm, and after a bit of a struggle, it came right out.
The new one went back in the same way, with a bit of a struggle getting it lined up and into the splines. It would have helped to have some help and/or to be about 10 years younger.
I will bolt everything back together Saturday before I install the new oil filter and finish up the oil change I started last weekend.
I know it's inevitable, but I hope I don't have to do this again for a while.

Chuck, I probably could have, but I had a spare axle with a blue silicone 'super boot' on it already, so it was preferable to just swap it out.

Make sure u drive that thing in all the way into the final drive. On fwd
cars it is not hard to assemble the susp around the driveshaft after
inserting it into the trans even if it is not fully seated. Everything will
work fine except the seal interface with the shaft and then the magic fluid
leaks out. May not be a deal with the GMC final drives, been so long I
don’t remember.

Thanks, but not an issue on the right side. Nothing had to come out of the final drive to remove the half shaft.

You don't >have< to undo anything but the shaft ends to take either side out. It's a bit easier top get at if you undo the bottom of the shock absorber and push it out of the way, but it can be done without if you're a bit of a contortionist.
