Steel wheels that are radial tire rated are worth about $ 50 each as one
needs to dismount the old tires and dispose them.

The hole must be 4 & 9/16" in diameter to be truly hub centric. There are
several folks out there using wheels that do not have that size center
hole, but the wheels have tapered lug stud bores and are used with tapered
lugnuts. Some report no issues with that combo. Some, like me, have had
issues with that. I ran the steel wheels for several years, and spent more
money on them than I did on my Eagles. I won't explain here, but sometime
if we are at a rally together, I will be glad to explain.

I am using the Ford wheels on my GMC. Got them with 4 dry tires and 2 newer Chinese tires(one of which was not round). I only paid $120 for all 6, she had asked $150, but I offered the standard 80% and she wanted them gone. The center hole is 4.75, so they do NOT hub center on the GMC like they did on the Ford truck. My easy fix for that was to get 4 conical seat lug nuts with a sharp cone and use those to center the wheels when installing them. It really only takes 2 of them to center the wheel. I spin the wheel/tire by hand with a foot or a block next to it to make sure I got it centered, and then put the rest of the standard GMC washer-faced nuts on tight, remove the conical ones and install the last 2 GMC nuts. New Kelly tires on those rims made for smooth running up to 90mph where I found the limit of the balance.
There was a locating pin on the inside mounting face that I had to grind off. I am also using 1.5 inch spacers on the front wheels to increase steering response and wheel stance and decrease the "rut-running" characteristic of the front wheels having a narrower stance than the rear. I do not recall them being necessary to install the Ford wheels on the front.

There will be times you are not around to do the wheel change.
Should that happen, there will be some issue.

I would think cone lug nuts AND not hub centric is a BAD combo. Might promote cracks to spread due the splitting force of the taper combined with road shocks. GM engineers did what they did for a reason, though everyone may not have a full understanding of their big picture. I site the history of the GMC and cracking of early mule 5 lug wheels as some indication of the forces encountered.

The conical seat lug nuts do not stay on for road duty, only used to center the wheel. I am not using 5 lug wheels, either. The GMC washer-faced lug nuts provide excellent clamping force and load distribution when torqued properly and there is no stress on the lug nut holes in the wheels.
Jim, whomever gets the GMC when I'm gone will also get the 4 conical nuts, a note of explanation, and also the original 16.5 inch wheels. If they can't figure out how to use the simple setup, they have no business owning/traveling in/working on an almost 50 year old motor home! If they are paying a mechanic for work on these coaches ($$$) and he/she can't figure it out in a few seconds, they better get a different mechanic.
